Well, it looks like there is a small possibility that eTime might create a wireless network in the area I live in. They need around 10-15 people to make it worth their while to set up some towers and roll it out.

As far as I can tell their offer is R695 for an uncapped connection with a speed of a minimum of 256Kbs. Sounds pretty good since there is no other alternative around here.

Does anyone have any experience with them and their service?

Which area?

Which area?

Prince Albert (Near Oudtshoorn).

The guys from eTime gave a presentation here on Monday. Seems like it would be a great service if they can get it up and running. I've signed up with them today, since they need people to pave the way and actually sign up so they can establish the service here.

The chances of Telkom rolling out ADSL here is less than 0, and there's definitely no other companies interested in providing a broadband service here. I'm just hoping that they will get enough people to sign up and then hopefully within a month or two I can say hello to a broadband connection.

BTW: Their equipment fee is around R3800 once-off (includes the 2.4GHz antenna and other bits and pieces). Is this more or less on par with what other WISP's charge?

No, R3800 is a rip-off.

Not sure who etime is, but as with anyone I'd advise you not to pay them any money upfront.

I'd advise that you have a look at Telkom's Satellite Internet (SkyStar, NOT DialAway) in your area and perhaps look at sharing it with your neighbours and/or local school.

Ask them exactly what is included in the R3800. Ask for Technical Specs or Model No's of the hardware they provide....

eTime Wireless

I've been using eTime wireless internet for about 2 months now and I have no complaints so far. Compared to the Telkom VSAT I used before it is a major improvement.
They came here and installed a 22dbi grid/yagi type of antenna with a built in router POE etc and it works like a dream.
I live near Uniondale and ADSL is not available and won't be for a long time.

I don't think their fee is a rip off. VSAT installation is R3000-00 and I payed almost R2000-00 for 2 gig per month.

If you look at the actual cost of Wifi equipment you'll see its a ripoff.

OK, the equipment is not worth the money, but they are the only people giving internet in my area (and Prince Albert). You cannot compare it to providers in cities. Who else is going to travel 200km from George and install internet in Prince Albert ? It's not like there are 50 users waiting to be connected, they will be lucky if more than 10 subscribe in the next 3 months.

Etime suck

WE had etime too, they were 80% online and always had exuses when i call to complain. They will even blame the wind and other wifi antennas, but i ran tracert on my pc and it seem to be their server that is not forwarding the packets. And their rep also sold us a packet that did not even exist, they only noticed it after a year. So i ended the so-called contract and upgraded my IS subscription to a 1mb's fiber optic.

I see Uniondale now has ADSL according to the Telkom DSL Checker
3-4 years later - DSL comes to Uniondale
