I wonder about this Homecoming Revolution: if you pitch up at the London expo and are white (as are many, if not the majority of expats in Britain) are they going to be told not to bother?

Well yes, I reckon many will politely point out that they left because they couldn't find Jobs.

Are they going to do this in Oz and Nz as well?

I think they will get laughed at.

Why do people leave SA?

1) They do not like to be under black rule? Yeah, there may be some like that, but I tend to think people in general don't give a carp over who "rules" them as long as its effective rule.
2) Crime?
3) AA / BEE?
4) "Backwardness" of ZA in terms of IT / Online stores / TV broadcasts etc - again, I cannot see that many people leaving because of that alone.

So, given the above, what has changed in 2 and 3 for the better to lure people back?

Yes, for two reasons 1. It infringes on peoples rights and freedoms and 2) It doesn't bloody well work.

Nothing has changed, if anything the process has accellerated
 
Honestly I think number 4 is a lot more powerful than you are giving it credit for...

You also forgot

5) More opportunities. It is virtually impossible to live comfortably while being an artist in SA. This is possible in 1st world countries.

Yeah, re: 4 - I still don't think it is this "alone" tho - which is why I bolded it.
Then again, maybe it is so in other circles.

Agreed on 5 - although, in certain areas I would think there are opportunities now - the Gautrain, 2010 stadiums etc are opportunities for engineers. Of course, #3 pretty much destroys that for most ex-pats anyways.

There seems to be ever increasing validation for the choice they've made. Perhaps you're also looking for validation in the other direction for the choice you made, i.e. staying?
 
I'm in the process of collecting the myriad documents I need to leave the country legally. My reasons for my decision are:

1) Uncertainty about the political future of SA. Some of the symptoms that concern me are the Zuma-saga, Pikoli-saga, Selebe-saga, Tshablala-Msimang-saga - I'm less concerned about the specifics of each example at this stage than the pattern that is emerging from the way that these issues are dealt with (or not dealt with). Whenever I get tired of all the bureaucracy involved I just think, 'Zuma for president', and my energy is miraculously renewed. I am a very apolitical person, but my threshold for cowpatties is quite low.

2) Crime. I have finally reached saturation point with hearing all the horror stories and wondering when my luck will run out. However, I'd still have to worry about my family and friends from afar.

3) Being considered an outsider. Even though my family has been in SA for over 300 years, I am considered to be an outsider in many respects. So what difference is there between being an outsider (supposedly racist white person) here or an outsider (immigrant) there?

4) Career options. My career prospects (especially in terms of advancement) are severly limited in my current organisation (and similar organisations), due to the colour of my skin. Being female doesn't help much anymore, and I have another 30 or so working years ahead of me. I feel the need to make a move, and in terms of my other concerns I feel I can just as well make that a major move.

5) After all of those considerations, the advantages of living in a country with a higher quality of life (services, shopping, relative safety etc) is merely the icing on the cake, helping to soothe the stress of starting over in a new place all on my own.

Why is bwana getting involved in SA politics? Shouldn't he be looking after the hardware forums? Why are he allowed to moderate the news forums?

Bravo! Bravo! .. you will get a standing ovation from me! I have recently emigrated (with my wife and 2 kids) and its the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life.

Many people argue Quality of life - but South Africa cannot be anywhere else except where it is now. Have an open mind embrace new experiences and just have a jol.

For me... I am off to the Museum to go take a spin in the Concorde Simulator this weeked.

For various reasons articles shouldnt be quoted in their entirety. Did you think to follow the link? :confused:

BTW - is a list of which mods are directly responsible for which section at the botton of each forum section.
