Experiencing ADSL problems? This may explain it

i will not use an isp that runs of the IS backbone ever again.

This is exactly where Seacom wins, when an outage occurs they're open and communicate, but Telkom... not a damn, it's never their fault. And as for Afrihost's backlog story, I've heard this lie many times before, protecting Telkom ain't going to score you any browny points!

God this blows... After Seacom went down ALMOST EVERYBODY got redirected to the SAT-3 cables.. *a week later* BBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Seems like we ADSL oukies just arent winning at the moment. I give them 4 days before its fixed, no use getting excited when they say it will be up approx at XX/XX/2011. Seacom said the same thing and we are still waiting...

It's not SAT-3 that's down, but some onward connectivity in Europe, beyond the SAT-3 landing in Portugal. Except for those carriers that use the specific cable, everyone else using SAT-3 is fine.

Seacom's been up since Saturday at 17h00 or so.

See this excellent reply ---

My Telkom Uncapped account has been flying at full speed since Monday evening. 24/7

HAHAHA man what an idiot!

You know what I did when Afrihost died? I dialed into my telkom dsl account and flew, full speed ahead. So you can take your "its telkom's fault always" and shove it. They have proven to us time and time again that their accounts are reliable and consistent.

U sound like a Telkom employee! Yes Telkom's network is stable... but I won't support them, simply because of the damage they've done to most South African's... while the rest of the world experiences true broadband, they stifle everyone with their blatant anti-competitive actions! So no... I'm no idiot, just a staunch Telkom hater of note!

My Afrihost d/l speed is fine, but my uploads are shockingly slow at 0.05mbps. No one at that company seems to give a crap either, blaming it on Telkoms line.

I may just investigate going back to Telkom now.

1) They are not the only people with the right to build local loops etc. If you are going to blame them, you have to blame the rest equally as well.
2) By owning a DSL line, you are supporting them. By using internet in SA, you are supporting them. Everything goes through Telkom and one way or another your money reaches their pockets.

inferno... on point 1, too true. But Telkom have done everything in their power to stifle competition. The blame for this is shared by gov as well, how can a private company have gov shareholders, who are instrumental in setting and regulating comms policy! Advantage Telkom!

On no.2... not to worry on this one, soon undersea cables like EASSY(live), WACS(Q4 2011) + Seacom will mean Telkom's SAT3 cable is no longer a requirement for redundancy. This, plus the major investment in non-telkom country wide fibre networks such as DFA, as well as the explosion(spurred on by Telkom's non-competitive strategies) in wireless internet(CellC, 8ta, etc.) means that soon the reliance on Telkom will dwindle fast! This is exactly why Telkom started 8ta because their fixed line business is going backwards at a rate of knots!

Nuff said

Ok, I am confused. If an undersea cable is the reason for the outages, then why does local data not work. At times my router just says upload and download connection is 0, meaning there is NO connection. At times it comes on slower than usual. I can open international sites easily, but downloading from iTunes is very slow. A friend has a telkom account and her ADSL is dead!

That is probably to do with a congested exchange instead.
