FIA and FOTA reach landmark agreement

By Simon Strang Tuesday, October 21st 2008, 17:03 GMT

FOTAA plan to make dramatic cost-cuts was agreed between the FIA and the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) in a landmark meeting in Geneva, it was announced in a joint statement on Tuesday.

It is believed that a broad agreement was reached between FIA president Max Mosley and FOTA chiefs Luca di Montezemolo and John Howett to introduce drastic cost reductions from next year.

The joint statement read: "Today's meeting in Geneva has produced significant cost savings for 2009 and 2010.

"FOTA are working urgently on further proposals for 2010 and thereafter."

But while the statement did not detail any specific measures, autosport.com understands that four key points were agreed:

- Engine life will be increased from two to three races from 2009

- Manufacturers must be prepared to make 25 engine units available, at a cost of 10 million Euros, to customer teams

- There will be a further meeting between FOTA members in Brazil to determine testing kilometre limits for 2009, and an agreement in principal on the introduction of a standard Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) unit for 2010 or 2011. KERS is believed to remain open for teams to use next season.

- The sport's governing body and FOTA will meet again after the Brazilian Grand Prix to discuss measures to reduce costs related to chassis development and the continuation of the use of customer chassis in the future.

When asked to comment on the agreements, an FIA spokesman said it was "inappropriate to comment at this time", but described the meeting as "very positive and constructive."

One source added that the meeting had "historical" significance because it "was the first time the teams had enjoyed such unanimity" in their discussions over the sport's future direction.

These are some interesting changes. I look forward to seeing them. Do we know if engine jokers will still come into play and if there will be any penalty for not using Kers?

I haven't read anything to suggest either yet, but I'm sure we will be hearing more of this soon. My concern is for the poorer teams who have reliability issues as it is... 3 races... hmmm - that could just favour McLaren / Ferrari again...

I'm all for cutting costs in F1, just should not come at the expense of ultimate speed. Making the engines last for three races can be done, but it means running the things at far less than the present 19000rpm limit, thus making them slower.

The reason I began watching F1 was becuase of these drivers' control of these cars at the limit. And now we keep lowering the limit. But I do realise that without these measures F1 will not be sustainable. The small teams will be the first to go, and then the struggling manufacturers next.

In the end it will be 4/5 teams that can afford to compete, and even they will battle to motivate $300m a year to run a team.

Bring on the diesel I say. :D

The may have lowered the limits but aren't the cars still lapping quicker than last years times. The improvements made in other areas have negated the limits imposed to make the cars slower/safer...

oooh... I reckon under those circumstances we might see my beloved Audi finally entering F1...

I think you guys should start watching WRC and see a awesome sport!

F1 is nothing compared too WRC!
Agreed, that's awesome but coverage is a bit poor on Supersport and how long does a rally last? Days? 3? 4? Not sure it's suitable as a spectator sport...

WRC is something I want to do, not watch lol... man, drifting like that in a Subaru on a dirt road... what a life...

I think them rally drivers make it look a lot easier than it is, hell those guys are talented. I wonder if they more skilful than F1 drivers? I wonder if any rally drivers have made it big in F1?

I think comparing rally and f1 drivers is going to be hard, its like comparing rugby and soccer players. Both use a ball but the sports are very different :p

That's very interesting. I see my man Mattias Ekstrom has had his fair share of victories. He drives for Audi in the DTM and has had huge success there too...

Am I missing a point? What is it going to cost the teams to implement KERS? All the developing and testing. Doesnt make any sense.

I would love to see lets say 3 teams with the current years Ferrari enjine and 3 with Mercs and BMW and so on. Would be most interesting. Cant understand why Ferrari sells the previous years enjine to other team. If a Ferrari enjine wins its still Ferrari powered.

7 teams with 3 cars each, would still be ok.

KERS is up to the teams to implement the "benefit' that it will give to the team. You dont use it, you lose out, simple, no penalty.
I would also love for AUDI to have an F1 team, at least then I'd be able to support a team and not just an individual.
F1 is for people who love good clean racing.
Rally is for dirty people that love to see dirt, and racing cars together, sort of a fetish...

According to Alexander Wurtz (Honda), KERS doesn't offer a performance boost. He reckons that there won't be much difference between teams that use it or not. We'll have to wait and see I guess.
