Fax2Email is a scam

[edit] never mind [/edit]

That sounds pretty good, thanks Shaun. But you forgot about the problem with the phising and spam emails... a rather big concern.

Other than that, which might not even be a Iburst issue, everythign looks perfect for this service. Does depend on the price of sending a fax though, what is that set to be, roughly?

*edit: oh and shaun seems to have been replying to the other thread instead of this one. He infact answered all of those questions fully. Probably does have any news on the spam issue yet.

@mountain_lion: who's doing your fax2email service?
I normaly use SaveMor Communications
http://www.directfax2pc.co.za

but I also have a fax2email number with Images, who resell firstfax
http://www.firstfax.co.za/images/

Both deliver to the same email address
Only reason I mostly use SaveMor is that their number is easier to remember.
I think the SPAM problem is with Savemore, but can't be sure.

All the service providers seem to use the 0866 number range and charge the sender the same for sending to your fax2email number.
I guess Telkom is involved somewhere in the process too.

Moderator note...

@Shaun, confused with the 2 threads about fax2email?, no worries I have correct the mistake for you :).

I got the same thing. Reported it to saix abuse and a few hours later I got the follwing response.

Good day

Please inform your user [email protected] that Spam will not be tolerated
otherwise SAIX will be forced to take stricter action against this user.

Mweb is requested to reply to this complaint by sending a message
informing xxxxx@xxxxx and c.c. [email protected] as to the action
that will / has been taken to rectify this situation, and has taken the necessary
action to ensure that this kind of abuse does not occur again.

This kind of abuse is against SAIX Acceptable User Policy
http://www.saix.net/cgi-bin/saix_use.pl

Log follows:

this was cc'd to me and sent to mweb, who also sent me a response promising an investigation.

hhmmm, I also started recieving the admin@gmail emails after i signed up to fax2email. The IP in the link was traced to some ADSL subscriber of SWBELL... some phishing scam... bleh this is irritating...

I also went that route. SWBELL is owned by AT&T, looks like a site hosted on a DSL line. The site doesn't work though ... I've also reported this to SAPS' computer fruad unit, for what it's worth. The person I spoke to seemed reasonbly interested, but a poorly run phishing scam doesn't seem high priority to me.

Does that mean that the IP that was the source of the phishing was resold by Tiscali/Mweb

Enough already

So far i have received 32 phishing spams in 4 days.... And still not a single word from either Tiscalli or Shaun@iBurst

Wake up guys!!!!

[edit] ok 40 spams now [/edit]

The real question is how are these adresses being harvested. Either someone internal to iBurst is reselling email details to phishers, or they have a undiscovered web-page somewhere that perhaps lists all the users that have signed up for fax2email that is being harvested by someone.

I would think it is directly due to signing up for the fax2email service. Otherwise all Iburst user's email accounts would be harvested.

Best bet is that the "free" service is outsourced, and "free", as is usually the case on the web, is not really "free" at all.

Fax2Email

<deleted by="ic" reason="inappropriate language & attack on forumites."/>. SaveMor Communications never hacked any email addresses. And fax 2 email is not a scam. We dont resell our fax 2 email clients email addresses. And we also dont send any spam. So now i ask 1 of you who is going to cover the cost of this message posted on MyADSL & MyBroadband. Some 1 will have to be responsible. I can give any 1 refrences of my clients, and you can ask any 1 of my clients. They are all happy with my service.

Who is this ??????

cant we force iBurst workers to state that they actually work for the company .....

Working hard today ic :)...

My spam stopped a long time ago.. Could have been a coincidence but I don't think so. I think a mole was caught and gutted.

The silly thing here, is that none of us knew anything about the company 'SaveMor' until savemor posted, and now we are told that a company called SaveMor was somehow involved with iBurst's fax2email service - we are left to make up our own minds...

Not to mention the obvious, but I assume somebody officially representing a company would not post material needing to be edited out...

Well, give them my name as reference, and I will tell them that I was not happy getting all of these phishing scam e-mails.

/me awaits your references
