Fed Up With Telkom

Hi all,

I am in desperate need of assistance...

I have a 4mb line with Telkom, data with another ISP. The line only syncs at 1.2mbs no matter what I try. Apparently I can get 8mb in my area. It was working fine until about a month ago. I have research all the noise errors that it might be, distance from exchange and so forth.

I have logged countless faults with Telkom and requested technicians, but no support.

Please, if anyone has contacts within Telkom to speed up the process or know of a private company that can be called out...please let me know. As I said....I am desperate...I have had enough.

Thank you

@pezulu - I have contacted them. They say it is a Telkom issue.

At first I thought it was my ISP because they are known to shape their uncapped accounts quite heavily, but this should not effect the speed at which my line syncs because they don't have the rights to manage my ADSL line.

Report them to the NCC, they will be at your house within a week.

PS, what are your line stats in your router?

@Rickster - Thanks for the info lol :)

Current stats:

Current Rate - Up (508Kbps) - Down (1312Kbps)
Max Rate - Up (833Kbps) - Down (1308Kbps)
SNR Margin - Up (12dB) - Down (6.2dB)
Line Attenuation - Up (33.7dB) - Down (55.5dB)
No packet errors

I know the noise levels are high. But it's usually between 40 - 45 db. I am about 3KM from the exchange and the max speed is 8mb...according to every ISP I have been with, which is basically all of them lol.

Line was stable at 4mb for about 6 months until about a month ago

Can an ISP change your sync speed if they haven't been given permission to manage your ADSL line?

Dude your line is farked up, are your filters in good shape? Any noise on the line?

My filters are new, i have tried 2 different routers. I have tried a direct connection without a filter. I also tried a direct connection into the main filter before it splits. Get the same speeds everywhere.

I don't know if there is noise on the line because I don't have a landline telephone lol.

As I said, the noise levels usually aren't that high.

SNR margin = Signal to Noise Ratio = 6db is the bare minimum for adsl.

Your attenuation is terribad. Log it with Telkom as a noisy line

I have similar scenario to you, though my line speed is 2Mbps ; have had multiple cut-outs & reboots of internet since about 6pm tonight, and was same last night around 11pm.

My stats about an hour ago :

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 9.4 7.0
Attenuation (dB): 62.0 31.5
Output Power (dBm): 12.4 19.6
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 3040 616
Rate (Kbps): 2048 512

Improved somewhat since playing around with filters & unplugging a phone, but there is definitely occasional noise on the line :

Most recent stats (bit of improvement) :

SNR Margin (dB): 14.3 13.0
Attenuation (dB): 55.0 26.0
Output Power (dBm): 9.1 12.7
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 5312 912

On the line to Telkom at the moment .....

According to agent I spoke to, there is a problem (was just told it was "maintenance" they're seeing to at the moment).

Don't know which area you're in, but even though the worst of it started last night, I too have had 6 months or more of inconsistent internet. Decided to live with it, as it was irregular most of the time, and also thought it was the ISP and/or the exchange upgrades.

As it seems to be increasing (daily), if my attenuation doesn't drop to around the 45 it was before (even though high, it was stable), it'll have to be sorted out.

Hadn't meant to hijack this thread, but since internet restored, (voice) line is now dead & speeds are lower than when had 1 Mbps ADSL.

(normally get CPT options coming up auto to test to, but this time got odd town to the north-east, so scrolled across to DBN to test ; usually get 1.74 Mbps on this line).

Don't know what Telkom did last night, because while they were seemingly working on things, there waa a lot of crackling on the line, then it went dead. To be reported ...

Telkom states there are no reported issues in the area I stay in. My line synced at 4mb again last night at about 9PM, but this morning was down again. Telkom obviously have major issues with their infrastructure and can't keep up with the maintenance....no surprises there.

This is why I am looking for a private company either to fix my problem or install fiber.

Hopefully you can get a Telkom tech out there soon. I am having no such luck. lol.

I also had the same problem when I still had a telephone. The line was usually dead and was very noisy when it decided to work. The Telkom tech came out and removed the outside connection to the alarm company. That cleaned up the noise significantly.

I don't have a pc right now, but where in ones router does one get the stats? I got the Huawei router that was supplied by Telkom, and all I can see is advanced settings, maintenance, test connection, configure. Just curious to know in case ssomebody asks
