Feeling like a failure?

Why? I'm not old nor a CA and I don't earn much less than that... Being a CA is hardly the be all and end all of high salary jobs.

Hey, agreed. Lot's of other professions can earn a bucket load; but a degree does generally mean more in a corporate environment. Entrepreneurs for one can reach for the sky.

I don't work in government or have any involvement in grants/tenders...I work for a listed company, corporate environment and put in many hours and hard graft. I don't sit and whine about a dead end job either. You can either be a teacher for the rest of your life or get off your butt, study further and work your way into a more profitable career. The problem with teaching is that it is comfy. No big decisions, no dealing with budgets/money, lots of leave, repetitive work and some kiddie sports. Sure it's a pain dealing with brats and their parents but it's not a stressful career.

Ah. You are a Dean of a faculty of one of those "poncy" schools? I bet you hate emoticons . And it is part of a listed company? Reminds me of the Rembrandt group (although that might have changed) that own all the medi-clinics....

But besides that, I am guessing you didn't get where you are just because of studying and many hours of hard graft. In other words, I am thinking you know how to play the "political game"? Not everyone has the ability - or the inclination - to do so.

I'm not really complaining.

Just an interesting little piece of background information about me.

I went from not having any intention of teaching and not knowing anything about my future plans, to physically standing in a classroom and teaching ... within the space of a week and a half.

I didn't study education before. I did that while I was teaching.

I've lectured courses before. I found it absolutely draining, not entirely without its pluses, but not for me. Do you enjoy it?

Immensely ...

But yes, it is emotionally VERY draining.

I want to say more but I have to run to a class now.

I've also done the same, and it is working pretty well at this point. I have not reached my goal yet but I am well on track to meet it before I am 30, and if things go really well, before I am 28. I am not sure about settling in one company though, it does get boring dealing with the same people/shizz over and over again.

If I may ask, what is your goal?

Aiming for R60k CTC before I'm 30. Currently 28 and if I get lucky hopefully I'll be getting that soon (fingers crossed). With that I can live comfortably and save decently towards retirement with 100% replacement ratio at 55-60. It's a bit of a stress at the moment because I am supporting myself and my girlfriend as well as paying for both of our studies etc but after this year I'll be able to save quite a bit.

Ideally I would like to be on R75k CTC by 35 but I'm willing to settle on R60k for now and eradicate a lot of the stress I currently have.

In the most perfect world, I'd like 800k p/a, but that is a big stretch, I will have to be one of the best in my field to reach that. It's not impossible. You need a combination of work skill, social skill and bull****ting skill and you'll be there works for me

Well you're wrong on all counts. I lectured for 30 years, marked 1000s of papers, did my PhD and raised my son. I put in nothing but hard work. I never inherited any money, everything I have has been paid for with my own blood, sweat and tears.The company I work for now compensates me for what I'm worth.

I can tell you all I wanted was to be a teacher / lecturer. But I looked at it and sadly I figured that I couldnt support a family the way I would want on the salaries that were offered. I ended up studying engineering, hating my job and somehow landed in IT somewhere in between.

Some things from this. Even though you may look at others and want what they have, I can tell you there are people who would love to do what you do. Secondly, I changed careers relatively late in life. I started in IT around 27 years old and would say I do well enough. If you work your ass off you can do well, even if you start late.

So if you are unhappy, start studying or doing something on the side etc in something you do want to do
