Hi guys
Vumatel is asking people in Bothasig area to show interest, so who ever lives in Bothasig please go sign up on their website, tell friends and family too share on face book as well. We need just over 1000 houses to register.

Local to MWEB CT server:
http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6528122718

Will keep testing my end but from last two hours been perfect.

International looks good, but why do you have such high latency to MWEB CPT? Was the line idle when you tested (should have done this when we installed earlier to be honest)? IMHO to MWEB CPT should be sub 5ms. 34ms looks to me as if the traffic made a run to JHB and back.

Anyone else in the area, you're welcome to jump on board (wireless for now, fiber to follow) and letters should make it to the post boxes towards the end of next week if everything goes well in terms of the available time.

I am dying to get fibre in Bothasig. I'm showing my interest on every provider I can find, but I really love what 123Net (https://123net.co.za/en/front) is offering. They only require 264 more people showing interest and they will roll it out.

Nope, forget 123net. They will not roll out, Table View and surrounds and other areas that qualified long ago (actually went way above number required), were never actually approached. They will not offer outside of that small area they currently operate in, they will only offer ISP packages on other providers.

ISP wise, I'd still stay away from them and rather take e.g. Cool Ideas or Vox.

We're busy folding and packing the letters, communications should go out to some 1,000 residents in Bothasig early to mid next week :D

That's about 1/4 of the pile :wtf: Going to take a while I reckon...

Also in Edgemead

What's the cost to set up ?

At the moment I get 12-14 meg download and 1-2 meg upload. Will the wireless speeds be similar or better

Hi Guys,

Ok, letters are going out today... What we are essentially saying is:
- Our backbone is fully operational, and actually already carrying a few clients in the area;
- We will be trenching Bothasig, and are finalizing drawings, planing and way leaves;
- Immediately, customers can connect to our fiber backbone wirelessly (we are effectively just changing the method of last mile delivery), whilst still achieving the same low latencies (sub 5ms locally, sub 25ms nationally, and sub 160ms to the EU);
- Customers opting to sign up now with Wireless for last mile connectivity, will be migrated to the fiber last mile when the infrastructure is in, free of charge (in other words, you will only pay a installation fee once);

Essentially what will happen now, is the community will dictate where we focus our resources in terms of trenching. If we have a client that signed up in Cook Road, we will priorities our roll out towards Cook Road. Any home we pass, will have access to FTTH. Homes we don't pass, will wait longer as we 'fill in the gaps' in terms of the deployment plan.

The wireless last mile adds very little (if any) latency, so the difference should be negligible.

Hi Savage

Where do we sign up to get the wireless? Moving to a new place and do not care for signing up with Telkom and paying line installation etc.

This will be in Van Passel.

Is there a map of availability? I have friends who live in Bothasig who would be very interested, but they are closer to the Edgemead side.

That's the initial cover area for fiber specifically. With the Wireless we'll be able to cover more and outside of this provided that there is line of sight too.

EDIT: Pretty much everyone inside the Fiber deployment area, has been sent a letter. You guys should start getting them towards the end of the week. Not sure what SAPO's delivery schedules are like.

Glad we did manage to get you sorted out... Definitely one of the more challenging installs I've had :crylaugh: Looks like your service did finally start to behave itself though :D

You must give me a shout if you don't come right with the wireless access point, would be happy to assist.

Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd give another quick update. We've been approached by another resident in the area earlier today, that is in a semi-complex (small, only ~15 units) - but it opens up a lot of possibilities for us if the site is feasible for fiber.

I've had a look at the locations of existing customers that has signed up so far, and we have 4 potential fiber routes we could look at to take live, which may pass a considerable amount of houses. We are going to start approaching civils companies for quotes (or do feasibility to trench ourselves).

This is precisely what I was hoping was going to happen. The interested parties that signs up, is forming small clusters within Bothasig, which is systematically making it more and more feasible for us to roll out fiber. It's much easier and quicker to quickly trench 200m and know you're passing a good number of properties, instead of trenching 30km+ through the entire Bothasig and getting no where in terms of signups (significantly less risk, significantly less investment required). Two of our customers are ~300m apart from each other (which will cover about 150 properties on a proposed 1km route that we're looking at), another one is ~200m away from our main POP :D

It's also obviously a lot easier (and quicker) to get way leave approvals for short, non-disruptive routes in one or two streets, instead of getting way leaves to dig up an entire neighborhood - so I'm hopeful. That's at least what we're hoping for. Instead of asking for the entire pie (neighborhood) in one go, we ask only for a small bite at a time, slowly, but surely, eating the entire pie in any case.

Thank you for all the support, I would like to encourage you all to please continue signing up, showing interest, and supporting us in our endeavors. Slowly but surely, we are getting there. I'm amazed at how far this has actually come in the few weeks that its been live - didn't expect the amount of interest that we received thus far.

PS: Too soon to talk about time frames - don't bother asking when or where yet please - there's also the matter of privacy towards our existing customers that needs to be respected. I'm going to enjoy a long weekend away first before I start working on this...
