Fibre in Strand

Is there anyone here who already has a fibre connection in Strand? If so who is your ISP, what's the speed and how is your experience with them?

Nope not yet. I have also been moved to a ETA of 20 Feb. I however doubt this will be reachable, as the conduits havent been connected over the public roads yet (Rollout area 1.3). They are however currently busy completing this, one road down towards beach road as we speak.

But then the ducting still needs to be pulled in, the fibre blown and reticulation needs to happen. I think realistically 1.3 might be complete by March/April (this is also what I have heard from some people who have inside info). The council has caused numerous delays with this rollout, and Frogfoots contractors seem to be much slower with their tempo compared to Beach road.

I have however preordered (last year October) 100/100mbit with Cool Ideas, and am contemplating taking it up to 200/200. They have installed a little black access box on my pavement, which no one else has, but this hasnt even been connected up to the conduits. Currently its just a empty hole in the ground underneath it.

I have heard to be wary of Cool Ideas as they are getting much more sign-ups than expected and things are going downhill in terms of performance and support.

Support local. What's the chances that Cool Ideas can put someone in a vehicle and have them at your house within 15 minutes if you phone them with a major issue?

They are by far the cheapest for month to month. Gone are the days where I am willing to sign a 12/24 month contract. If the service is bad, I will simply jump ship. I am not loyal to any company.

What are the chances local guys will be at your house in 15 minutes? What will they be able to do as cable/link related issues still need to be logged at Frogfoot, so at the end of the day no matter which ISP you go with all ISP's are at the mercy of the layer 1 and 2 provider? The only reason why I would phone the ISP is when the physical link is off, or their radius is not authenticating, neither which requires a visit to my premises. I think everyone here is more than capable of running their own systems beyond the physical link and account authentication.

There are many other options at basically the same price. I'm looking at Rocket Net. They are spot on with support and their performance seems to be better than CI.

I have also heard good things. Have you seen any stats on international speeds? Do you know if they can provide a static IP address (CI can not, and seem to refuse to even consider it, something in my opinion that might bite them)? I dont mind paying a reasonable amount for it. Hell even Telkom has this as a option for DSL at R39p/m.
 
The only company I know of that provides a free static IP address is Cape Connect, but then again you've already made it very clear you're not interested in going local...

Its not as much about local or national that I base my decision on, price is a major factor. CC is 50% more expensive (R1500) than CI (R999) and Rocket Net (R995) mentioned above for a 100mbit/s service. For the same price (R1500) there are ISP's offering 500mbit/s links via Frogfoot.

Adept also seem to offer a static IP as standard at R1306, they are based in Stellenbosch.

Price, quality, speed, pick two. If you read my posts you will know how long I've been a client of CC. You get what you pay for.

Last time I checked, Stellenbosch was not in the Helderberg basin. Using your logic, we may as well consider any ISP with offices in Cape Town CBD, Newlands / Rondebosch or Milnerton as being "local".

I also need an ISP now with the fibre rollout in our neighborhood. Why are you guys not considering companies like vodacom or vox as a fibre isp?
 
They started digging yesterday. A truck load of guys rocked up this morning to continue.

RocketNet seem to double Cool Ideas's international speeds at certain times during. the day.

FYI I got some feedback from RocketNet regarding static IP's. They responded to my email and confirmed "We do offer static IP's however chargeble service. Last time I checked, was R50."

Just be careful of the activation (not installation) fee that seems to be present on some fibre networks. This is not ADSL where you you jump ship and be on another ISP within minutes of signing up.
 
I received two emails this week regarding fibre being available in my area (altena road) but their coverage maps says otherwise.

Frogfoot via CapeConnect (apparently wireless fibre, so that's already a no from me)
and Amobia.

Both of their coverage maps does not show coverage. How do i know for sure? Maybe the maps are outdated?
 
Would be nice if the maps were outdated, and I actually have coverage. Received a phone call from Frogfoot a couple nights ago to enquire whether I would like to pre-order fibre. They got my details from my Expression of Interest, which means my address is there as well.

Got me all excited, until I asked them to double-check my address. No coverage on maps, coverage on the other side of the street. Spoiled my evening.

I've been using Amobia for about 3 years now, not bad for a 4mb/s "uncapped" wireless connection.
I tried contacting Cape Connect for a site survey, but they lost interest and so did I.

Great, can you perhaps do me a favour please?
I would love to know the latency on a local speedtest, as well as international via that wireless fibre

I'm a gamer so I prefer a fixed line over wireless
