Film recommendation

I don't want to derail the Canon lenses thread any further, so I'll start a new one.

I'm going on a once-in-a-lifetime trip that will involve lots of natural scenery. I'm taking the DSLR, of course, but I'm also keen to put the K-1000 through it's paces and experiment with some of the more specialised slide film (now that I can afford stuff like Fuji Velvia).

What do you guys recommend? I do intend to take some street shots too, so Velvia 50 is not going to bee to great. Does anyone know the difference between 100 and 100F? Not even Fuji's website shows any difference.

Any other recommendations?
 
I guess Velvia 100 is the best compromise, although he doesn't mention skin tones at all. I guess I'll have to sacrifice a roll before I go to test it out.

the funny thing is velvia100 actually has finer grain than velia50
i thought velvia100 was only available in japan
100f is the one that velia fans don't like
i would go for velvia100 if i could get it

use your digital cam as an exposure meter

LOL - take it to a very pro lab & have it drum-scanned (very expensive - just one for fun)
then show it to us :cool:
 
I kinda got to the same conclusion - Velvia 100. I can get it locally but even if I couldn't, a month is enough time to get it from Japan. I know a few hosties :)

Why do you say the K-1000's meter is no good for slide film?
 
the k1000 just has a simple meter (i guess it will work for most shots)
but slide film's exposure is critical like digital's (if you want it done right)
a good idea is to calibrate your digital to match your film, then use your digital for exposure
of course print film nails it every time and i have never had a problem with exposing it on my k1000
 
Yeah, I know - it just gives a full frame average. But that's actually not bad for landscape :) The 40D is going with me and so is my cybershot which can give me a histogram overlay. Anyway, even without that, like any thing you learn to consider it's weaknesses

maybe you should try a plate camera LOL - that way you can shoot one shot at a time

He he, well, the landscape-heavy trip never materialised. I did take a few shots in the US, so I decided to make it a "one roll, six continents" project. This particular roll contains pictures from East Asia, UK and USA already, so I'll keep it around until I could visit S.America, Africa and Australia too :)

Fortunately I have another film body. When things have settled down a bit I'll start taking it out again.

Speaking of the 40D - sometime the will is just not strong enough. I took a measly four pictures in New York...
 
I just read this whole thread again. I thought I'd mention, the K-1000's meter is actually surprisingly good. It's consistently better than my film rebel.

Too bulky?
 
No, I actually have it with me everywhere I go. Just the artistic effort of looking for something to make a picture of. Creativity doesn't come all that natural to me :(

Well, I was only there for a day and a half, and I didn't do any touristy stuff. Met with a friend for dinner and spent the next day first trying to off a cold and then shopping. I did take a picture of the Empire State building, but it wasn't as nice as the ones from last time. Took a few more (it was more than four, actually - I checked last night) but nothing special. I did get loads in Chicago and DC though - coming to a flickr stream near you soon... :)

You should really try Fuji Superia print film. It's a lot cheaper ^^ :D.
 
Price is not the issue. Right now I'm house hunting and studying for an exam at the same time. Even though I carry my camera with me, I don't even think about taking it out.
