As small as you can handle, as old as you can handle, must be a known reliable car to avoid massive repair bills.
Since you don't do much mileage fuel consumption is not really the issue...the issue is mostly depreciation if you are not a high miler.
Also since fuel efficiency isn't really the main concern you could actually go for something a little bigger than the smallest you can handle.
The way to beat depreciation is to get an older car...5 to 7 years ideally and as reliable and cheap to fix as possible.
If you did 25k kms per year then with an older car fuel efficiency does become a significant consideration.
 
As requested - trusty Corsa 270k on the clock got it at 70k I put 200k on in 12 years. Treat cars well service and maintain them properly and they will look the same the day you got them.

Very much indeed. Had it since my last year at Uni and my entire work career. Often one of the oldest cars amongst the fancy cars at the work parking lot.

Passing back to parents at dealer trade in price - they need a second car. Their corolla has 700k on the clock and not the most reliable anymore. Not trying to make anything from it to be honest its served me well and they can use it,

Or my 2014 SQ5 although obviously I was asking for trouble with German electronic bits. However the engine and gearbox will last a long time.
I'm currently a high miler so diesel was necessary and I currently average 9.1l/100km in a car that can get to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.
My fuel bill is higher than the expected depreciation and insurance bills combined.

For example you lose 25% of a car's value in the first year buying new.
Once you do the math on that you quickly see that new or nearly new cars cost a hell of a lot in depreciation every month.

How can you not like almost 300kw? I love powerful cars. I sold my M2 as I can not have 2 toys at the same time, I guess.

In the Raptor you get the best of both worlds. A thing that fscks off and you can load kak in the back.
If they brought it out again with the 2L diesel I would not have bought one. I would have kept my V6 Amarok.

100% from a young age i was taught to take car of what we have and also ensure it's well maintened and serviced when needed.
Regular maintenance goes a long way, it’s a shame that lots of people just treat their cars as disposable appliances these days. There’s no reason a well maintained car can’t last fifteen years with how good modern production methods and tolerances have become.

I plan on driving my 2007 Audi until the wheels fall off :)

To be fair most manufacturers are to blame for that. Cars are no longer simple mechanical devices that are easily serviceable.

All that fancy new tech comes at a price, especially when they conveniently start breaking just after the warranty expires.

Anyone buying new cars often has no choice but to trade in when the warranty expires, which is why I always extend mine to the maximum...
 
Almost a month later and still super happy with the car.

Sat in horrific traffic from Sandton this afternoon cruised slowly down the highway in a very comfortable cabin listening to podcasts and pretty much used EV most of the way.

Yup that's now 4.6l per 100km over the last few days. The mind is still boggled that that's even possible. When I did the don't car about fuel efficiency hit 5.8l which is still insane!

Avoid Kiger/Magnite. They are riddled with issues that dealership’s themselves aren’t even bothered to solve, or rather can’t solve. Not to mention they are just modern “tin cans”.

I won’t say anything about the Chinese coz I know you are smart enough to already know not to consider them.

Since you don’t care about oomph you could get a brand new/Demo Mazda 3 1.5 active for about R400k..

As much as I love diesels I don’t think you should consider one if you do low mileage. Rather stick with Petrol.

You can also consider a Corolla cross XR demo for about R400k- R430k. Since you mentioned that you will be using it for long distances, keep in mind that Hybrids only work great in town and they are not fuel efficient on long trips.

New Suzuki Grand Vitara is good too, However it will be very underpowered and might be frustrating to drive, and Suzuki after sales service is not that great, You could however work around this by getting the new Toyota Urban cruiser but the top of the range Urban Cruiser does not come with the 9”info screen like in the Suzuki. The Toyota only get the tiny 7” or something like that.

Another option is a New/Demo Honda HRV. Not sure if you are close to any dealers though.
