Hi All,

I recently stumbled upon the fnbconnect.co.za website. Looks like FNB is making an attempt at entering the VoIP market just as some of the other companies are trying to do.

They have quite an interesting value offering, however I have found that their VoIP call costs are actually more than when dialing through your normal Telkom Line? Surely if VoIP providers want to enter the market and gain market share their value offering needs to be competitive?

Was just wondering if anyone else out there are using them? or maybe another provider in SA?

Not impressed thus far...
I posted on other similar threads about this...

I'll let you know one day when they fix it and it actually WORKS!

I've tried 6 times to get setup and I just get "Service is temporarily unavailable" the whole time. Rubbish.

I must confess however. I have managed to get it set up from my Nokia E71, as well as using the Mobile Phone Application they provide on their website, from a Linksys SIP phone and have also managed to get Asterisk to make and receive calls using their connection. Quality? Have not had a bad call yet and I only have a 384k ADSL.

My biggest concern is whether their call charges are actually competitive. So far my research have not proven this to be the case when compared to Telkom for instance.

Have also registered for the curiosity sake. Think very soon it will be FNB Disconnect. :(

I must say that the call quality was not too bad. The thing that iritated me was the fact that they stated the assumed savings in a very unclear manner..

Work it out... if you are on the ConnectChat plan don't expect any real savings, infact the call rates are more expensive compared to Telkom

http://www.telkom.co.za/common/AugFiling/Tarrif.html

the only time you will be saving anything is if you dial International numbers.

and if you on the ConnectExtra plan you can expect some savings on mobile and international numbers.

realistically .... how many of us dial international numbers ???

I'm using FNB Connect just for ADSL connection. I have no need for calling anyone internationally or even just calling anyone locally much so VoIP, while cool, doesn't really bring me any benefit.

I have to say, I have been using ConnectXtra for about a month or two and i have saved about R500 so far. I have bought two extra numbers wich I gave to my girlfriend and mother. I am mostly in touch with them and now we chat for free. SMS are much cheaper, and call to mobile and telkom are cheap as well. I am finding this product very effective. The quality is very good as well if you have 3G coverage.
