Forcing Google Services to local (RSA) IP address

Google is definitely working on the both local & international IP addresses! (I've tested this on mweb business uncapped).
 
What's up with this whole "Google is down" thing? Google is not down, and hasn't been down since as long as I can remember. The last "google outage" I recall was when Gmail sort-of crashed - over a year ago.
I can confirm though that Google is not working automatically locally for SAIX-based clients right now. SAIX needs to sort out their GGC and DNS stuff.

You could override the Google DNS entries by modifying your hosts file. There's already a thread for doing just that in this subforum.

I have Prevx installed - FNB recommended it. If I change my hosts file then Prevx complains that www.google.co.za is being redirected to an unsafe address by the hosts file. Besides for turning off Prevx protection how can I get round this.

Do you connect through a router? If you have a router that runs linux (like a Linksys WRT54GL) you could configure static hostnames on the router's mini dns server. If not, your other option is to install a little DNS server on your own PC that will intercept requests bound for google stuff, and forward the rest to your ISP's dns server... but of course that's not very easy for everyone to do. Solution? Remove Prevx, use Google internationally, or live with the Prevx complaints, I guess?
 
I have the Netgear DG834GUv5 router. I am not too sure how to set up static routes on it. I asks for destination IP address, IP subnet mask, Gateway IP address and Metric.
 
This DNS overriding technique has NOTHING to do with routes!!!

I don't know Prevx, but it might be like AVG, that you can disable the hosts file checking. Just take note that you will be taking a security risk if you disable the hosts file checking, since a trojan/virus can then override DNS entries this way!

The best way is to host a DNS server, preferably on a router. I seriously doubt that you can do this on a Netgear router. If you have a router that runs DD-WRT/OpenWRT/RouterOS, then you should be able to do this, but I highly doubt that you'll be able to do it on other routers (besides maybe expensive Cisco routers).

I'll see if I can manage to get the BIND9 DNS server going on Windows sometime this weekend.
 
:confused: I've added the list to my hosts file, and replaced the IP address with the SAIX IP address, but it doesn't work :S. If I paste the IP directly into my address bar, it connects to www.google.co.za, but using any of the names doesn't work. I've tried rebooting (to reset the network connection). Any help?
 
AnthIste, thats probably because you're using my list, which I've said would not work when copying it into the hosts file. Try using Catal's list instead.
 
Thanks Pada, I tried Catal's list and it wouldn't work either. If I do ping www.google.co.za it says it tries to ping 74.125.47.104. Doesn't that mean it's ignoring the hosts file?
 
Yes, then for some reason its ignoring your hosts file. Which Anti-virus/spyware application(s) are you running?
 
Only NOD32 (Free Trial), no firewall. I have Windows 7 x64 if that helps any. Oh yeah, I'm using PPPoE dialup, my router is in bridge mode. Does that make a difference?
 
bah, now I'm suddenly not capped again so I can't test any more atm. Someone recomended stoping the DNS Client service, I did that and will post back if it worked or not

EDIT: I tried a ping and it seems to be using the 196 IP, but I'll have to see if it works on local-only cap as well

EDIT: Now that I'm back on local only, it's using the 74 IP :confused: very weird, wtf

Thanks a lot Pada, I'll check it out when I get back from varsity this afternoon. It seems like overkill though :(. But hey, if it works, it works
 
I've been trying to get gmail and google docs using only Openweb's local only
What I found worked was to disable NOD32 temporarily incase that interferes with using the hosts file mods, and then whichever address is displayed in your browser as not responding eg.
mail.google.com/blahblahblahblahsomeweirdcode.php/ or www.docs.google.com/etcetcetcetc/
whatever it is!
just add it (and pay attention to whether it's got a 'www' infront of it as that matters, so for instance make a www.google.com and google.com dns hosts entry)
and use one of the local ip addys that the guys who started this thread recommended (IS or SAIX for on my account, got them mixed in my hosts file)

so basically just repeat the same damn ip with every web addy that won't work, even works for dynamically generated addies in google docs for dloading docs

excuse the bad grammar it's 2:30 and i'm frkn tired
