Ford Bantam 1.3 advice needed

It's this pump on those engines.. they are notorious for the spring, that's used to push a piston and regulate pressure, breaking and you end up with a noise akin to lifter knock but, not quite the same..

Remember back when I was working engine engineering dealing with this issue on the boss's bantam..
Just going over the posts again, just wondering if you wouldn't mind advising what spring you were referring to here? And how it should work and what failure looked like back then? Thanks if you can :)

Testing my memory now.. was a long time ago.. send me a pic if you can.. should jog my memory..

The relief valve moves all the way to the right in that pic, then it moves freely to the left till about 2mm of the hole in the inner metal piston is visible then if pressure is applied towards the left I can get the entire hole visible, let go and it goes back to 2mm. Hope I'm making sense..

The spring is used for the inner metal piston.. they tend to break in half.. as it's operating, it's turning.. this movement then has the two broken bits of spring clicking as they turn over each other.. it's this clicking that's audible and akin to lifter knock..

If yours isn't broken, I am going to lean towards bearing knock, given the metal shavings and the fact that we didn't have metal shavings in the oil back then..

Sounds right.
Maybe pull the retaining clip out( holding the piston down slightly), watch the order of bits carefully and check the spring out. But from the blurry picture it looks normal to me.

I fear you have bigger problems...

Sorry for the blurry picture all I had right now :D thanks once again for the input will struggle some more tomorrow

Had some time to do some thinking and the relief valve basically isn't tensioned enough to close the gap so it stays in an open position and only opens wider, spring doesn't push it back to a closed position. I'm thinking this is an issue? Can't get it open to check the spring without breaking it open so I guess we will do that lol. Hopefully not too much damage in the head wasn't much metal filings so gonna take a look and if not too much damage try run it in again with new pump oil etc. Thanks again for all the advice!

Great news, spring in oil pump was broken in half. Not sure exactly how that happened on only 90k ks suppose the age had a role to play.

Tappet cover off no visible damage, cam looks great the metal filings were just from timing chain slight wear.

So will put all back together with new pump and clutch while gbox is off.

Thanks for the assistance!

The boss's bantam also had around 100k k's on the clock when his spring in the oil pump broke.. seems quite common on them..

When my 1.3 Rocam Ford Fiesta starts experiencing something similar to lifter knock, I'll at least know now what to tell the mechanic to look at. It's at 115k km so probably bound to happen one of these days...

Those Bantams are great runners. Mine's a 2005 - 215000 km on the clock. I'll be reminded of this thread when i get to that problem.

Great runner indeed only issues I can recall is waterpump failed and the heater pipe broke, both easy fixes.

The only unfortunate thing is that the gearbox has to be removed to change the oil pump, this kind of makes an otherwise easy job quite time consuming and can see how a garage would charge quite a bit for this.

Hi guys.
Would anyone here have an idea on how I can get the oil pressure up after replacing the pump ?

I have rebuilt the engine and all is good , but I am not getting any oil pressure so the car will not start.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Considering the rebuild, your oil ways may be partially blocked due to improper cleaning..

Was a new oil pump installed..?

Did you fit the oil pump dry, or give it a bit of oil to prime?

i find that the Shell helix is the best oil in the 2011 rocam 1300. i also have an issue i was driving on the freeway and then i started getting smothering as if the bakkie is not getting enough fuel. i then changed the coil pack and changed the fuel filter and then the thermostat temperature switch but it is still doing the same thing motor has been completely rebuilt and it was going ok for about 6000 kilometers. Now it doesn't want to idle properly and it is smothering. i checked the spark plugs they all burning a light tan colour. what else could it be because since i washed the engine it is worse now. I am thinking it could be the ignition leads!? anyone with advice it would be much apreciated. thanks alot. when i drive normal it smothers but when i put my foot flat on the ga pedal it goes like crazy
