Free DSL modem with ADSL self-install

Oh well, they should have done this from the start, but remember the reports of the call centre staff that didnt know about self installs?
 
There is also talk that Telkom has decided to combine all their technical departments dealing with services like standard phone lines, ADSL, ISDN and Diginet. This could not be confirmed, but if true this may actually aggravate the problem rather than solve it.

I have certainly noticed a substantial degradation in the quality of service on isdn lines. Where previously the response was usually the same day or at least within 24 hours they took almost 48 hours to repair my last interruption :mad:

huh? I doubt this other factors i can't explain about it, but staff knew. ;) Maybe the few couldn't remember or were new
 
The solution is to recruit more technical staff to serve customers better, but in an environment where the share price is often seen as taking precedence over staff working conditions or customer satisfaction this option may be pushed to the back of the queue.

Should have done this from day one, as the installation is a no brainer.
 
What I find 'amazing' is that the 'free' router is equivalent to ~2 free months of DSL384 fraudband. Since they can only adjust prices annually, I guess this must be their way of giving a discount until the next price adjustment, in an effort to leave less customers for Neotel. Though why they only have this offer on till end of March eludes me :confused: Marketing strategies tsk, tsk...

[Edit:] @GavinMannion: When i asked at the Telkom shop, they said no contract, but u know Telkom and getting their facts straight... ;)
[Edit2:] If it is only for people signing up 24 month contracts with TelkomISP, that sounds like something for the competition commission to hear about!

I did a self-install. I made it very clear at the Telkom shop when I applied that it was a self-install.

First time I phoned for progress on my order I discovered it was not marked as a self-install.

I phoned 5-6 times after this prior to being "turned on" and on each occasion I confirmed that it was a self install.

I still got billed the R437.50 ADSL installation. I have phoned to get this charge reversed. I am still waiting.

I had the same thing in January. But I went to complain about it, and they fixed it pretty quickly (within a week) and I wasn't charged for it.

A good telkom experience. Right after a bad one.
 
This works great for everybody except the people going from ISDN to ADSL. Having to redo the wiring is going to be a pain in the butt.

Anyone know if you can get the modem if you are doing an upgrade e.g. to closer or 1024/4096?

Join the club also waiting for a refund but I suspect the next Ice age will be here sooner.
 
prolly the crappy macaroni modem... which they picked up for cheap-cheap at some bazaar somewhere in the East... :D

yah told a few friends last week as they were considering getting it.. but now this is a nice way to get alot of people to opt for an ADSL line albeit with a dodgy modem[altho i'm one of those people look at people 1st when hardware is blamed]. Question is will they cope with the added demand? I mean no money needed on router so people will jump to take it..
 
400something for installing,
Installing involves:
1Taking the modem out of it's box
2Pluging all the little plugs in
3Connecting it to the pc?!

Bloody hell!
 
i live in jhb and it takes Telkom 1 year to install my adsl line + i done self install and they charged me R404.00 ex Vat still waiting for refund but at the end of the day everything works fine and i use about 10gigs a month on a 3gig cap with telkominternet
 
Hi..

I moved to a new Complex, but my flat doesnt have a telephone line, so i applied for a line & ADSL, but told telkom that im doing to do a Self-Install because im doing to buy my own Router and use my OWN ISP...

My question is, do i qualify for the FREE ADSL MODEM?? The Technician phoned me this morning to ask if he can come to install my adsl, so it would be FAB if i can get a free router, saves me R500

Read here for how much uphill one potentially has to go thru to get anything from Telkom!

U really cannot believe anything a Telkom employee tells u sometimes... Generally speaking, they are misinformed!

@FaNIX: Did the techie come round and charge u the R437.50 and then Telkom told u don't qualify for the free router because u didn't order a self-install? Their order system is a mess so I think thats why one hand doesn't know what the other has told u...

I'm still on ISDN and my conversion saga has dragged on since November last year due to various reasons, and me then adjusting my desired DSL activation date due to Telkom incompetence.

The plan is to get a buddy who is good with wiring to help me remove the ISDN NTU once I am plugged into the DSLAM. I suspect the first I might know about being plugged into the DSLAM will be the day when my ISDN stops working! It will be nothing short of a miracle if Telkom has the courtesy to phone before they do that... (Went to fetch the free router today, but am still awaiting any sort of indication as to when my DSL will be up and running)

Will hopefully let u guys know how this story ends!
