Free Telkom ADSL speed upgrades planned: source

Wonder how that affects the WiMax guys?because we are paying for 512kb lines ?more that people will be paying for 1mb lines ?
 
This should help ease not increase congestion in the long run.

Right now you have a guy with a 384k downloading a 600MB file will take him hours to finish the download, now he's keeping all the capacity to himself for hours and hours and hours. Give him a 1Mb line and it'll take him about a hour and thirty minutes, after which the capacity he was using is freed up for everyone else to use.

Only a very small percentage of guys, probably less than 5%, will have their line active 100% of the time.

If this is true, then there will probably be a massive usage spike for a month or two while the newly upgraded users attempt to download the internet and then it will settle down once they get bored.

I can confirm the 1 meg to 2 meg upgrade as the change is currently already in the testing database...but I don't see anything about 384...
 
You're too late, Telkom. You lost me as a customer entirely, voice and data, because of this 384k issue. Five years I stupidly clung to hope.
Call me when you make 8 meg entry level.

Did you even bother to read my post properly?

Each user will have a lower % time used than what they currently do which will reduce congestion over time.

Let's say you currently have 100 384k users on a given exchange, now each users downloads his 6 linux distros a week that he watches at let's say 600MB each, so that's a total of 3.6GB per week per user.

3.6GB at 384k will take roughly 25.6 hours to complete, for those 25.6 hours that users is using his shared portion of the capacity all the time.

Now give them all 1Mb lines, now the download will only take 9.3 hours, which means that each user is now spending 16.3 hours less downloading than what they previously were allow other users to use capacity they were previously using all of the time.

Now take this across the 100 users, so the 100 users would've been using capacity for 2560 (106.6 days) combined hours while now they will only be using 960 (40 days) combined hours which is a significant reduction.

Think of it this way, you're travelling along a road at 60KM/h, it will take you 6 hours to cover 360KM, now they increase the speed limit on the road to 120KM/h, it will only take you 3 hours to cover the same distance after which you get off the road and another user can take up your spot.

As Sting pointed out, the users are going to try and download the internet in the first few weeks but will soon realize it ain't that great and go back to normal usage patterns.

Seems like this is a move by Telkom to force all the ISP's to have to buy more IPC data to prevent network congestion from having more people with faster lines, so that they don't risk losing that 30% revenue.

At least its a win for the consumer.
 
If anyone has the information ,please help me here. I want to know how much speed is the Telkom network capable of at the moment,meaning pure capacity without any imposed restriction or control by telkom?
 
I am really happy for the 384k users. I was on 384k for a while & waited patiently for a speed upgrade but eventually couldn't wait any longer. Now at least my 1MB will be a 2MB.

3 x the speed = 3 times the congestion! LOL

Well having done away with 512. 1MB is the only real option to upgrade to, plus upgrading from 384K to 1MB at the moment only costs around R300 extra.
Doing away with the 384k will mean Telkom is starting to offer realistic "broadband" packages.

Also I noticed my 384k line normally sits on 38/42Kbs when downloading but yesterday for a 15min or so it was on 92Kbs I dunno if they were testing it or maybe my line speed is now 1mb and it's being throttled by my 384k account.

So now I have to ask myself since I was wanting to upgrade to a 1MB account anyway do I wait and get upgraded for free or do I upgrade now and get a 2MB upgrade.

2MB or not 2MB? That is the question. :)

Well the guys on 10Mbps can theoretically get 24Mbps if they are close enough to the exchange as the 10Mbps lines operate on ADSL2+ which has a maximum speed of 24Mbps.
 
man,you are right I repeat again.My thoughts exactly was about the highway or the simple water pipe increasing capacity means faster at a shorter time and thus efficient. Lol now what you on about?
