Free Telkom ADSL speed upgrades planned: source

Telkom shooting themselves in the foot here?

Seeing as I can't get the full 4mbps that I'm paying for I'm going to drop my line to 2mbps as that's the max my line can handle at the moment. When I say max I mean that's what I sync at, performance is actually well below that, so as much as I would love an 10mpbs upgrade it'll feel so good to give Telkom the ****-you for making me pay 4mbps price while not delivering even half that.

And I know I'm not the only one.

ps. And no I don't live too far from the exchange. I used to be able to sync at 6mbps and was super happy about performance before.

Means there are multiple DSLAMs in your exchange.
You are currently linked to a 4096Kbps DSLAM.
If there are ports available on the 10Mbps DSLAM(s) you could get it. Also depends on your distance from the DSLAM and the condition of your copper connection.

90% of ADSL users have yet to see ANYTHING in terms of improvement. Cost wise, or speed wise. Nothing, nada.

AFAIK Telkom didn't announce this.

Finally light at the end of the Tunnel....if it's to be believed.Guys this a momentous bit of news from this Telkom source(finally a break into what could be termed true broadband) and, as MickeyD said in another thread these are but baby steps,this baby will run.40Mbps exchange upgrades,IPC cost cuts,Uncapped accounts from Telkom,speed upgrades,WACS coming on line,Bitstream..Nov 2012?? Naked ADSL 2012??????:whistle:.....exciting times,if you believe.:D
 
These upgrades are however not unexpected. In November 2011 Telkom said that they will offer their broadband customers “consistently more value (speeds and caps) for same price”.

I'm terribly sorry, but Telkom saying the above quoted, still makes upgrades of any kind very unexpected, and totally baffling it it actually happens.
 
This is amazing news. Finally Telkom is waking up. Looks like ISP's gonna have to buy more IPC to cater for this though
 
Not really, the TCP overheads will shift to that of a 2 Mbps line, so you'll get the full account speed i.e. 128 KBps, as opposed to ~102 KBps. Also I don't think that ISPs would increase their prices much, if at all, since they didn't do that for the 512 Kbps upgrade - and they did just receive an IPC price cut.

He was talking about if people still had a 1Mb/s account on 2Mb/s line. If you were on a 2Mbps line and account you should get around 200KB/s
 
This is great news. I just hope they upgrade me, as I'm on a g.dmt sync exchange... I don't think we have metro ethernet here in Tokai/Constantia area... Surely they could check to see if the exchange is congested first? If not then an upgrade could be manageable.
 
Still no 10Mbps upgrade for me yet either :erm:

They announced the 10Mbps upgrades about 2 years ago? So let's give them another 2 years and maybe I'll get lucky. So that means these other upgrades should be ready by about 2016.

Each user will have a lower % time used than what they currently do which will reduce congestion over time.

Let's say you currently have 100 384k users on a given exchange, now each users downloads his 6 linux distros a week that he watches at let's say 600MB each, so that's a total of 3.6GB per week per user.

3.6GB at 384k will take roughly 25.6 hours to complete, for those 25.6 hours that users is using his shared portion of the capacity all the time.

Now give them all 1Mb lines, now the download will only take 9.3 hours, which means that each user is now spending 16.3 hours less downloading than what they previously were allow other users to use capacity they were previously using all of the time.

Now take this across the 100 users, so the 100 users would've been using capacity for 2560 (106.6 days) combined hours while now they will only be using 960 (40 days) combined hours which is a significant reduction.

Think of it this way, you're travelling along a road at 60KM/h, it will take you 6 hours to cover 360KM, now they increase the speed limit on the road to 120KM/h, it will only take you 3 hours to cover the same distance after which you get off the road and another user can take up your spot.

As Sting pointed out, the users are going to try and download the internet in the first few weeks but will soon realize it ain't that great and go back to normal usage patterns.

I disagree. What you are saying is that if they increase the speed limit of trucks on the N1 between JHB and PTA, there will be less congestion.
 
People that obviously have a faster line, have the potential to download a lot more than the guys on slower lines. That's all there is to it. And will take advantage of that, if they don't they just abusing the said speed potential they could be using, and i feel it's highly unfair to people that would make use of it, Eg, Area Durban North - A lot of people are retired etc, there, do you think they'd make use of a 10 meg line ever,, but no, telkom go and up there line speeds. meh I would benefit and so would the hub a community of peeps that upload from myself and other users. You have the potential speed USE it :) why waste your upload capabilities every month and be a recluse greedy person that only downloads and hoardes to themselves
