Ive said it once, Ill say it again .. I REALLY believe, telkom should not drop the 384 package, they need to re-introduce 192k, and make the circuit cost free with any landline .. Its all good and well saying broadband should be at least 2 meg etc etc .. but what about the "have nots", at least access to web browsing and mail is a step in the right direction.

This wont help you if so many people are on the road you cant drive at 120km/h...... Just look at the current N1 at 5pm on you'll know.

The whole point is moving all the traffic off the highway before 5pm, if the users don't have to run their lines 24hrs/day they won't be on the road at all.

I disagree. What you are saying is that if they increase the speed limit of trucks on the N1 between JHB and PTA, there will be less congestion.

Yes, because they will be spending less time consuming space on the available road.

That over there is ideal / aimed at the users, who only have local cap, and have limited access or speeds, The data speed you get from a lot of users, will make even a 384k line worthwhile, Due to the fact it's easier to get your maximum threshold achieved on your line. Anyways check it out, guarantee you will stay Obviously uncapped 4 meg lines etc are welcome, broaden your horizons.

Think back to when everyone was on a 56k line or those that could afford it a 128k Isdl line, what joy was it to stay connected on a R7 all weekend package, I'd say look back and be thankful we actually do have some sort of adsl options available. Yes the speeds could be better and the isp packages more affordable for all. So i guess we just need to be patient as always and hold thumbs that we do eventually get our adsl true uncapped and a Faster line speed fix!

Fantastic news allround, and I'm on a 1mb not complaining one bit if 384 gets a slightly cheaper deal for a brief period. As long as we all get cake I'm not going to **** in the little guys birthday party.

It's cheaper for the "have nots" to buy a 100mb data bundle for R50 and use it on a cheap phone to browse (which most people already have). I doubt any of the "have nots" will pay over R250 per month just for the ADSL lines before receiving any data. If they're willing to pay over R250pm they might as well get something like 8ta 10GB for R199pm.

My initial reactions was not to take us back to even slower speed, but just maybe this is something that can have a massive impact on us as society as a whole. I like the idea. There is a big difference between zero internet and 192k. They can even include it in prepaid - this can actually make telkom relevant again for many more people who has a below R4000 income per month.

Does not really make sense, you are still using a expensive port on the dslam and it's more than halve the bandwidth of 384kbs.

Could also be costly to keep the older DSLAMs powered up and to maintain them, being obsolete and all. Costly to keep spares and duplicate network management systems. Also takes up floor space.

Could also be a problem in a MSAN area... provide a 192kbps on a 24Mb/s enabled port.

Good idea, though.

This is going to be fun, even though it sound cool, I am not getting my hopes up, it is to good to be true.

All the people complaining (the ones with faster lines), the 384k's have been paying for the faster people and they have been enjoying faster speeds for a LONG time now, can shove it.

Errr, if I remember correctly, the 384k has been running at close to cost whereas I would love to see what the guy paying for his 4mb or 10mb line thinks about subsidising your poor "shove it" ass. The people who have been paying for the faster lines, are actually the ones paying for it.

I do agree that the 384k package was long overdue for an upgrade, having been on it for many years and only in the last year did I decide to upgrade to 1mb when it became feasible. And you guys will love the hell out of it too when it finally happens!

I believe what he means is that the price of the ADSL line rental portion for 384K lines only just covers the cost for Telkom (hardware, installation, upkeep, etc). I may be wrong though.

I am also on 1MB & I honestly don't care about what the 384k guys get cos its got nothing to do with me. I am just excited about getting the 2mb.
