FTTH Montana Park

I received a few calls about the 'final' installation for about R400. Did anyone else get calls like this from telkom? I rather want to place the order via afrihost or webafrica
 
Our coverage area looks like Australia. And, it seems like the go-live date is just as far!
 
Apparently the rollout has been paused due to Openserve testing the option of rather implementing g.fast over copper.
 
Openserve is clearly not interested in our suburb.
Can't we get an interest register and request for proposal to another provider?
We have quite extensive backbone infrastructure in the area from MTN, Neotel, DFA etc. I am sure someone else will be interested in providing us FTTH.
I am now tired of Openserve's empty promises.

Please add any other links. Only problem I think now is Openserve started thus other providers may avoid the area for now because there is already a provider in the area.
 
Having dug new manholes, strung fibre between poles, installed black boxes and done some so-called "final" tests, what would be the rationale behind delaying the installation to test an alternative technology? Surely they have already invested a lot of time and money in the area? Why don't they just finish the job and spread some joy for a change?

I don't know either. But I have exhausted my efforts in trying to figure out why they suddenly stopped over a month and a half ago, and that was the best answer I was given by a project manager at Openserve.
 
Though they have already planned and spent some money on those plans, it can only point out to one important aspect - capital.

The capital for fibre rollout has runout or the capital injection needed for this project in a short space of time is not good for their books or any other entity for that matter.

The consideration for G.Fast may just be a strategy to slow down the appetite for fibre, especially in the absence of capital.
 
Saw an Openserve truck in the street today (Veda Avenue), and noticed a cable running across the light poles that wasn't there previously.
 
A Telkom technician came to repair my ADSL (a regular/weekly thing) and said to my wife that they expect fibre to switch on only sometime next year (roll out delays because of the contractors apparently). I can't vouch for how accurate this is, but it would not surprise me. I just hope this is not the case as the crap, unstable copper line I have is driving me nuts. I'm seriously considering a month to month RAIN fixed wireless LTE to save my sanity until fibre eventually arrives. The rate at which my ADSL link is going up and down is eventually going to give my router an orgasm.
 
Today Telkom has one of those blue tents at a traffic circle in Veda Road. Optimistically I asked about fibre. The response was "...maybe sometime next year, but now we can offer ADSL or LTE". Not unexpected in the light of some previous posts, but of course that was not what I wanted to hear.
 
My wannabe running skills sometimes take me to the arare where there is coverage. I wonder if the people in that small dark purple blub really appreciate what they have. I needed to downgrade my line to a 2mb even though I qualify for 10 mb and was on that for many, many years. My house suddenly, out of the blue is to far away from the exchange now lol
 
Between Dabchick Road and Vleivoerie Road, the telkom coverage map says you qualify for 100mb fibre. However, the colour has not changed to dark purple. It also allows you to place the order, but with Telkom only. Third party providers couldn't help me. Is it the same for everyone, or does the telkom website have a glitch?
 
Looking at Telkom Coverage and Openserve coverage maps. I still only see it up to Francolin Street. (It hasn't moved since first go-live of fiber) What website are you looking at?
 
The colours on the coverage maps have not changed, but if you click on some addresses in the area, they will say fibre is available and show a dark purple bar on the right of the map. Others say future fibre is coming and you can fill in your details. Maybe some areas have actually been switched on?!
 
I spoke to afrihost today and apparently telkom opens up a bit without updating the website. I have no choice to sign up with Telkom, as they are the only one allowing me to sign up. Afrihost cannot sign me up due the map that have not been updated yet. I have placed the order directly with Telkom and will let everyone know the progress. The telkom sales representative said 7 days lol
 
Update: Telkom cancelled the order today. They stated that the coverage map is buggy/faulty and that I should wait for the dark purple before applying. The month-to-month, line-rental only option is only available if you call Sales. You will not find this options online.
 
This is the reply I got from Openserve on fibre in Montana Park:

" .. according to Network Engineering, “ the project is put on HOLD till further notice, due to funding”.
