Noticed that there are 2 blocks of flats across the road from me that have Telkom FTTH available.

Nothing around them have it available on the map...

I am assuming at least one of them had fibre already for the cell towers on the roof.

Which apartments do you stay in? I stay at the Summerseas Apartments and asked whether the board of the apartments was considering fiber...they have no idea what fiber is...so we can kiss that idea bye

I moved here in JAN and I am still trying to get ADSL or uncapped LTE... telkom is useless :/

Decided to just start from scratch this afternoon. So I have a fresh new order. With that of course I am back of the queue. Will probably get the new order info from Garth tomorrow. Hopefully this one isn't stuffed up and I get get installation within 3 weeks.

Summerseas is on the sea side of Marine Drive, yes?

The land belongs to Transnet and Telkom may not install services on that side. They lease those lines from Neotel. So Neotel need to do all the cabling before Telkom can lease any lines from them to enable Telkom to provide you with ADSL services.

So uncapped LTE going to be my best bet?

Landlord had a ADSL line and was supposed to keep it on for me, agent stuffed it up and the day I moved in said "oh sorry i meant to tell you"

Its party of my lease, maybe I should cancel and try get into Cape Marina

If there is an existing line, apply for DSL via Telkom. It may a bit longer as they need to re-activate the line via Neotel, but it will work. Nice and close to the exchange so you should get a good service. And it should be VDSL capable...

Once the ONT was installed and up and running, did Garth send through your access details by any chance? Also, with regards to the installation fee of R1750 - are those costs still in play seeing that there's been some comments going around saying that the installations were "free" at some point?

The installation was R1710. And yeah, Garth sent the access details almost as soon as I let him know that my connection was up and running.

The impression I got from what the Telkom guys told me, was that it was the additional installation costs that were waived because my installation was a DSL 'migration'. Ordinarily, all the extra stuff like outside conduits, trenches, extra long cabling etc. are added costs.

Telkom arrived on site this morning - cracking away at the installation. A great team of guys and was nice to finally meet some of the guys I've spoken to on the phone.

I should be operational when I get home from work tonight.

I tested and wasn't able to get onto Telkom's site using the guest account. I just just received a call from the Telkom tech to say that everything is setup and ready to go but he's not getting light at the pole - so a team is meeting tomorrow morning to do tracing and find where the issue lies - they suspect it is at a nearby distribution point as from the pole to the ONT is good to go.

They hope to have the Fibre line up and running tomorrow.

Seems like all the Telkom poles need work, possibly due to contractors screwing them up. My crew spent hours sorting out nearby poles.

My ONT is showing a green optical light, but I can't get any throughput. Gave after after 20 min of waiting and rebooting. Back on DSL now and working fine.

This fibre line seems to have a lot of downtime...

I popped past the house and looked down the road earlier today - where the guys were working last night, trying to figure out where the issue is as to why I'm not getting light at my ONT - didn't see the guys. I did happen to see them close to our offices on the other side of Cape Road though, first thing this morning (07:00). Unfortunately didn't get to ask them if they happened to know what was happening as I had a meeting.

They are hoping to have the issue fixed and the Fibre up and running by the end of business on Friday.

That sounds really bad. My one installation crew guy mentioned that half the houses in College Drive have messed up telephone poles as a result of a contractor (each fibre connection is two poles off or something like that), and that it would be a massive mission to fix. He had no idea when Telkom would get around to it, but he wasn't optimistic that it would be treated as a priority.

FTTH is now available to some parts of Walmer under MTN, I'm waiting for Telkom FTTH but am thinking about MTN in the mean time, it's just the R3000 installation fee is a bit much...

MTN's prices are insane though. For me it would have been R879pm line rental and R1500pm for 500GB data.

R2379pm versus the R1227pm current cost. And you're locked into a closed network.

Yeah and no unlimited night time data, etc. Just wondering how long I still have to wait for Telkom FTTH though. Hopefully when Axxess or Afrihost announce new FTTH packages they will have packages for Telkom FTTH and MTN FTTH (Since MTN is the majority shareholder). I know Axxess have already sent out a teaser about their FTTH packages to be announced soon (they sent the email on 3 Feb), but will have to wait and see what happens.
