Hi guys! I'm very new to this, but could someone please explain to me what processes still have to be completed for the last portion/s or Rondebosch to be made live on Openserve's network? I do understand that all tests have been completed, and have passed (having spoken to the contracting manager/supervisor two weeks ago), as well as all the visible evidence in my back yard (OFB black box). This is SO frustrating!

Don't get your hopes up. I ordered OpenServe fibre at the end of June, they arrived to install beginning of July, turns out that the infrastructure wasn't complete so they went away again. Almost a month later I'm still waiting... no comms from WebAfrica or OpenServe.

I'm also hoping that my neighbourhood will get another option besides ripoff OpenServe. Literally every other fibre provider is cheaper, especially for the higher speeds. For example 100Mbps OpenServe with 3TB cap is R 3,200 per month but Octotel 100Mbps uncapped is only R 1,000 (and that's 100Mbps both ways whereas OpenServe is only 50Mbps up).

Thanks for your honest reply! It's just that my ADSL line is so shocking - apparently due to faulty cables in the Rondebosch area; my speeds are generally 1.2Mbps DOWN and 0.1Mbps UP on a 10Mbps CAPPED line and it's intermittent as anything, as too is the landline! Telkom haven't sorted that out since I logged the fault on 19 June (surprise, surprise). Any further information or update about the Fibre roll-out/approximate live date would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Sybawoods,
What street do you live in?
Close to haldene or rosylin?

I'm in Belvedere Rd. Have had the OpenServe cables and box in my yard since April, so a bit frustrating to not be live yet. OctoTel has given an ETA of mid-September - better than the communications black hole from OpenServe. That said... I've now probably positively jinxed OPenServe to go live in the next few days for the rest of Rondebosch :)

I'm in Heseldon Road on the "East" side of the road and only the "West" side is live as of right now (I know, FML), but for both of our sake, hopefully the huge gap in light purple on OS's map goes live real soon! Any idea of an estimated live date? WebAfrica posted a map back in January, with Rondebosch broken up into phases, and most of those areas were supposedly to be made live by yesterday (31 July).

Dang :( . I don't have any inside info, unfortunately. But all the techies I spoke to working in the roads around us over the last few weeks, seemed to think it was a matter of days / weeks and not months. I'm sure it's imminent, particularly with the OctoTel go-live around the corner.

I have not seen any contractors busy at the closest access point (the white box?!) for a while, which is on the corner of Portland and Sandown. Have you seen any activity there recently? fibre live.jpg

I had the exact same problem and was also told I was too far from the exchange to expect anywhere above 4Mbps. Then one of my neighbours (on whose property the telephone pole resides) destroyed the line to the pole in the process of doing renovations , which meant Telkom had no choice but to come out and lay new copper. After that I thought I'd try my luck with their 10Mbps offering and what do you know, I now get a stable 9Mbps.

(You might be asking "why do you want fibre if you're already getting 10Mbps", the answer is that 20Mbps fibre with the same cap will work out cheaper monthly than ADSL. So why the hell not?)

As for ADSL line issues - I have heard first-hand from the mouth of an OpenServe technician (all of whom are ex-Telkom techs) that areas where fibre is installed or being rolled out are being "deprioritised" for ADSL maintenance. Translation: if you're in one of those areas, Telkom wants you to upgrade to fibre and they're willing to "encourage" you by ignoring ADSL issues. I do kind of agree with them (why bother upgrading or fixing old and broken copper when fibre is faster anyway?) except for the fact that they've botched the fibre rollout, surprise surprise - I'm just holding thumbs that my damn ADSL line doesn't die before they get my fibre sorted!

So you're probably in the same "deprioritised" boat, with the added f**kup that you're already on old and broken copper so there is even less incentive for Telkom to do anything about it. Unless you are willing to deal with Telkom's call centre, or actually take an hour out of your day and wait in line in one of their damnable branches, there is sweet f'all you can do.

Except... there is a way to circumvent that nonsense. There is a member on these very forums, TelkomZA to whom I have turned in the past when the standard avenues have failed - and s/he's come through for me every time. So drop him/her a PM with your tale of woe, and hopefully your ADSL will get sorted out - as for OpenServe fibre, I don't have any contacts unfortunately. :( It seems like fibre is being wholly managed by the ISPs with the actual infrastructure providers having little or nothing to do with end-users, which is good because it means the (hopefully more responsive) ISPs will process queries faster, and bad because it means there's an extra layer of broken telephone between me the user and the actual fibre provider when (not if) s**t goes south.

I can tell you that from personal experience with WebAfrica handling my fibre install, I'm certainly not seeing any benefits of making the ISPs responsible...

Oh, and FYI - y'all in Rondebosch who can get fibre from OctoTel - I hate you, because OpenServe is the one and only option in my neighbourhood... I am literally 1 street away from OctoTel coverage... it hurts... :(

Are you near Ave de mist?
Friend has 100mb openserve line, and it is live

I'm near main road, other side of the railway.
Octotel has been busy...
I spoke to rep and he said they going live mid/end September

Received an email from AfriHost this evening to inform me that OctoTel's planned go live date for Rondebosch has been delayed to end September.

Yep, Ave De Mist is within spitting distance, and has been purple for a while now. It makes the wait even more painful when your neighbours (who could care less) have access to fibr. Grrr!

Latest update I have received is that the network is live and that there are some internal systems that need to be updated to ensure processing of orders.Hopefully that shouldn't take more than another week and then you should be able to order.
To be clear this is specifically for my area which is off Jameson Rd but would assume it applies to remainder of Rondebosch area which isn't live yet.

Thanks for sharing. I'm pinning my longer term fiber hopes on OctoTel, but will have a flirt with OpenServe if they arrive soon enough.

Overhead fibre boxes were completed around my place about 2 months ago (Openserve). Placed an order with WebAfrica in June. 2 Weeks ago an Openserve sub-contractor came to do the final installation to my house. Unfortunately the closest fibre box is a little bit too far away according to them, and an additional box needs to be installed.

There are literally boxes everywhere around my house, but there isn't one on the pole where my copper currently comes from.

So close but yet so far.

Edit: (I'm on Sandown Road)

Is this the box that you are referring to that needs to be installed?
