Anyone know anything about OctoTel? I received an invitation via email from Afrihost to take advantage of their free installation. Clicked the links until I got to the point where it said "check if fiber is available", or words to that effect. To my surprise, Octotel popped up as being available in my street. I expected the usual "not available yet". I phoned the Afrihost helpdesk and they confirmed my address as being available via Octotel. Wen't ahead and did the order... hoping for the best but suspect it may be a glitch in the matrix... Openserve is providing the infrastructure in our area and they've not lit the fiber yet, according to their own map.

OctoTel may not be live yet (altho according to Afrihost, they are, which I think is a mistake) but I found this on their coverage map - Rondebosch is definitely on the cards, which means we'll have another choice besides Open Serve.

That's great news for you as 2 choices are so much better than one.Pricing looks decent too.
Also explains why Openserve have been so active in Rondebosch the past 6 months.

Spoke to a Tech today who was doing splicing and he reckons end of the month will be live for remainder of Rondebosch.
Based on that I reckon we can bank on 31 July to be realistic.Getting close now!!

Seems realistic and in line with the predictions we made 2 or 3 months ago. I start a new job on 01 August and taking some leave in the week before - crossing fingers that I'll have fiber in time for my down time!

Looks like your 31 July prediction may be sane advice. It's getting too quiet in Rondebosch again. Feels a bit like the watched kettle that doesn't want to boil. Hopefully the calm before the fibre storm.

Was in comms this week with someone senior at Telkom and still on track for 31 July.

The Octotel teams have arrived... we saw their crews and Octotel branded vans digging up the pavements in the vicinity behind the Library in Rondebosch this morning - didn't get the street name, but the trenching has definitely started, and the Octotel roll-out seems to be a happening thing.

I know this is a fibre discussion but as a new inhabitant in Rondebosch and coming form the CBD where we have had fibre ( On Octotel ), dont think that this is the answer to all. I went from a 10mb fibre link back to a 10mb adsl link and it performs better. Dont get your hopes up.

We're excited mostly because we'll have more choice. OpenServe (Telkom) is currently rolling out Fibre in Rondebosch, with large parts already live. OctoTel simply means we have another (cheaper) option. As a technology, Fibre is much more stable and reliable than ADSL and, of course, has much higher speeds. You must have switched back to ADSL because of poor service... problem with your installation, or problem with OctoTel?

I'm just up the road in Claremont. On ADSL now, but was looking forward to fibre, until I saw the price of Openserve

Octotel have just dropped off some flyers in my postbox, and apparently they're on the way. R799 vs R570 or something for 10Mb uncapped :erm:

When did you R'Bosch okes first get marketed to, and when did they deliver?

Just need to calibrate my expectations...

OctoTel hasn't been aggressively marketing in Rondebosch or Claremeont, from what I can gather (unlike OpenServe, which has been heavily marketed via companies like WebAfrica for months).

OctoTel started trenching in Rondebosch in mid June, with first clients meant to go live in August. For Claremont, everything appears to be a month later.

There are large parts of Rondebosch already live on OpenServe Fibre, while some of us are still waiting and anticpating a go-live date of round about 31 July.

For both OpenServe and OctoTel, is there is no definitive dates - although OctoTel appears to be a lot more transparent. For both, it's best to watch the maps on their respective web-sites which is updated regularly as they progress.

@Sybawoods - only reason we on ADSL is our area is not active yet and when we moved I needed connectivity. I will, as soon as its available, switch to Fibre. Yes its better technology, yes it has much faster speeds. My only point is dont think that 10mb vs 10mb is worlds different, and a congested fibre exchange is just as poor as a congested ADSL exchange. I am just ecstatic that ADSL is still so good in the area.

Our street got Blitzed with the Octotel marketing material this weekend - big red envelope with a "Dear Resident" type information letter and other blurbs inside. Doesn't help that I'm waiting for new signs of fiber connectivity every day :D
