Roadblocks in different parts of Gauteng on Tuesday were not linked to e-tolling, the department of community safety said on Tuesday.

"The Gauteng traffic police today [Tuesday] have operations across different parts of the province focusing on vehicle and driver fitness," said spokesman Thapelo Moiloa.

"Each of these operations must not be misconstrued as anything other than law enforcement."

Justice Project SA (JPSA) said people whose vehicles had no defects were stopped at a roadblock along Atlas Road and asked why they did not have e-tags.

They were also asked why they were driving on the e-toll roads without an e-tag. Their names and ID numbers were recorded.

"There is no requirement for any person to have an e-tag in any law and even Sanral's spokesperson, Vusi Mona, and others have confirmed this," said chairman Howard Dembovsky.

He said JPSA was assured by the department that the exercises in the northern parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria were aimed purely at looking for defective number plates, licence discs and other vehicle or driver defects.

Why did people give them their ID numbers and names? You have a right to privacy and if it was a traffic officer you can insist on seeing a badge. If not, sorry for you.

They have a right to ask for your drivers license. All details are on there.

You'd swear this lot at SANRAL are like a nasty underworld Mafia .
Nothing like a bit of gentle (fear instilling , strong arm tactic) persuasion to nudge up the e-tag uptake rate?
Spread a rumour like this. People get scared . 100 000 e-tags sold . objective achieved.
Of course , Metro & the Traffic enforcement boys were more than happy to co-operate.
After all it is month end has just come up & the "bribe" kitty might be looking a bit bare.

Yes, all the things that defeat the Toll systems OCR. License plates, car details are correct for the plates etc etc etc. Pick a car without an Etag and the chances are higher that the plates are not right either

The roadblock of William Nichol at about 12:30 had 2 etoll vans parked there with the police. Wanted to take a PIC....but was late for a meeting

What I fail to understand why not of the motorists stopped failed to record the conversation on video??? Simple as that.

And now...for a show of shocking contrast...the other day I saw a SANRAL vehicle responding to an actual broken down bus on a highway. It seems that not all of their effort are aimed at a certain project of questionable merit.

Damn thats dodgy. I don't see any metro/SAPS/speedcop vehicles though...seems like this is just SANRAL pretending to be cops.

I'm no legal expert but surely you can insist on a badge number and then ask if they are pulling you over because of eTolls. And if they say yes you can insist on leaving.

...and ho file a complaint if you have the free time to waste.

No?

When you are stopped the first thing you should do is ask for the appointment card of the indivdual standing next to the window. And you can wait while they go off and fetch it from where they may have left it. If they don't have it wish them a good day and proceed on your way.

If they do have one you are obliged to provide identification if asked. You don't have to tell them where you are going, where you have been, or enter into any discussion concerning etags. If the conversation deviates in anyway from matters relating to road worthiness or road ordinances I suggest that you start taking selfies or recording the conversation.

It might be any idea to ask the traffis why they are allowing the SCUMRAL vehicles to be positioned on the roadside in a dangerous manner. They are in an emergency lane. Suggest to the traffis that you are going to lay a complaint that they aren't doing their job properly.

Yes, I know this all takes time and we're busy but either we're going to bitch and moan or we're to put some effort in to making the roads a safer place.

It is called an appointment certificate and by law, they need to provide it (otherwise you are allowed to drive away). But in reality, the officers tend to get upset or angry when you ask for it.

I've never had one get angry. You do get a lot of huffing and puffing about it. But if they want to see my drivers license they've got to show theirs. If they want to touch my licence, they'll also be handing over their cards.

How awesome would it be if someone created an app that tracked the IDs of plods that have asked for bribes. They go off to check your licence for outstanding fines while you check up if there are any claims of extortion.
