Gautrain to open before SWC

Going to do Joburg central from Pretoria central and back is about 110km. Thats 2200km in a standard 20 work day month for a commuter. Lets say cars average at using 9l/100km, that means 198l a month. So the average for a person driving currently to JHB CBD and back is around R1590pm if the petrol price is R8.

Now that is just the petrol and excludes the service ( approx R500 to R2000) cost for every 10 000km to 15000km (13800km used in 6 months driving if using my average or 26400km a year) and the proposed 50c/km toll road fee with would be around R60 a day (1200pm) assuming 60km of the road is tolled.

So the possible expenditure is around R2800pm (at a R8 petrol price, which will likely just go up more from now) just to drive to JHB central from PTA central and back every work day on a month. How does that compare to say a monthly R800 gautrain ticket?

Then what do you do when you arrive in Sandton? It's not like you can walk to your meeting/office or whatver or catch a tube train closer to your destination or ride on a reliable bus service...

The sky is falling ! The sky is falling !

Well if the Gautrain fails, like most things that ANC is involved in does, it would be a massive waste of money wouldn't it. Tax payers money I might add. Remember failure is an ANC tradition.

Did I say Sandton? Huh? Huh? I talked about city centres and things are much more compact there. And if you read my earlier post you would see I won't be able to use it too. because I work on the wrong side of the highway in Midrand and there isn't a gautrain rail from Menlyn.

What I'm hopeful for is that more commuters that don't have meetings all over the place (like you) and or other resons not to use it will use it and that there will be a good feeder system for them. Then there will be less people on the N1 and with the new lanes the N1 your car will be much quicker to get you to your destination for that R2800pm...

Suck that out your thumb? Who said a monthly ticket will be R800?

O ja, I forgot that I didn't get that info here. There was some gautrain guy on 702 or (was it RSG?) yesterday and he said that was the price they were working on in 2009 but that it might be subject to adjustment

Up or down? More then likely up if it's 09 figures he was working on. Despite all things pointing to lowering of prices by economists, someone forgot to tell the rest of our esteemed business owners that they can bring there prices down because they are paying less for products.

Not to defend or write off the A.N.C's many faults. But just for a thought experiment , please suggest a South African poltical party who when in power did a better job at giving South Africans a better life than the A.N.C.

This should be interesting.

It doesn't involve the ANC.

It doesn't involve the ANC.

And with that realisation watch all critique and "concern" grind to a slow apathy. What a hapless lot.

Still very curious to know which South African government did a better job at helping South Africans have a better life than the A.N.C.

If no one can come up with anyone , then I suppose we must all stop and reflect upon how lucky we are relatively speaking. Yes, that'll do.

I sure hope the monthly tickets are significantly cheaper for the Airport segment. My dad works on the airport, and he can save a tonne of money if they do that.

I suspect the main reason for the airport link to be that expensive, is to nail people who are flying (duh). You'll have to pay a LOT of money to park your car at the airport, or to taxi to and from the airport. Or if you're coming to JHB, you'll need to either rent a car, or again catch a taxi to the city.

If you stop at the station just before the airport, the single ticket price was something crazy like R80 less. So that last 2km segment costs you R80, and the rest only costs you a much more reasonable R20.

So you're saying taxpayers and citizens should accept mediocrity and inefficiency, simply because it is better than apartheid?

Intelligent, sane taxpayers and citizens will accept NEITHER apartheid NOR mediocrity and inefficiency from their government.

How did you twist my words in to that ? I explained earlier why it's important for your credibility as a "concerned" citizen, rather than a cynical bigot, to show that you acknowledge as bad as the A.N.C is, when whites were in charge it was way worse for South Africans in general. There is nothing controversial about expecting people to be able to admit this fact. Admit this and then criticise the A.N.C with valid gripes and I'll support you.

Anyone come up with a government who did a better job than the A.N.C in helping South Africans have better lives yet ?

I don't think R100 is steep. The cheapest ticket on the Heathrow Express is £16,50 from Heathrow to Paddington.

Wow, talk about cherrypicking ... let's compare to the worst of the worst. Firstly, TfL is a known corrupt, inefficient and mismanaged organization (first thing I read in the news when I got there a few years ago was a big TfL scandal). Secondly, train prices in the UK are FAR higher than the rest of Europe ... everywhere else I travelled in Europe, train ticket prices were literally roughly half what you'd pay for the equivalent in the UK. Thirdly, the Heathrow Express is a specialist speed service, you can do the same route much cheaper if you're willing to just go slower. Finally, that is bloody *London*, hello.

Wow, half you guys really made no effort to try and understand what you're talking about. Just from reading a few of the posts you could see that this is a service specifically for people who are flying, i.e. the terminal is inside the airport. The trains are made for carrying luggage to and from the airport, so this is not meant to be your monthly ticket type service to work. It's also a luxury service of course for people who can afford airline tickets first.

This is not the entire Gautrain service, and actually it's a specialised component of the train. This isn't the regular price or service.. but aai, should have known MyADSL posts would be completely useless/negative on the most part.

The average man in the street cannot afford to fly and would never need a Gautrain to the airport to start with. This train is not meant for average man on the street.

What if you work for ACSA and live in Alex? (Yes, the airport is a place of employment). Guess it's still taxis for you buddy because the ANC only cars about the elite and their self-enrichment.

I stand corrected but isn't the Gautrain a privately owned concern ? And if so and they can fill seats at R100 a pop, can someone explain the problem ? Are you all commies ?

It wasn't originally dubbed the "Shilowa Express" because of non-government involvement. They approved everything as an alternative public transport (for example, Virgin owns trains in the UK but it is still public transport or PUTCO owns buses in Joburg and it's still public transport) so it is a government-backed initiative. (And trust me there were many, many fingers in that pie)
