Getting better sleep

I won’t (can’t) spend money on one of those air conditioners for beds, but seeing how your core temperature affects sleep, has anybody tried those gel mattress toppers that carry heat away from your body? Do they actually work?

This heat wave :(
I would kill for just a cool pillow, the rest of my body can suffer but I can’t take it when the pillow heats up.
They also seem to make gel pillows though but I wonder how effective they are and comfort.

Perspiring on a pillow enough to drive me to insanity i hate it.

My problem is I can't sleep without something substantial covering me, which adds to the heat. Even with the AC on cold I still find it hard. I get my best sleep in winter, summer i just plod along between caffeine-and-heat induced insomnia and short bouts of sleep in between.

You have insecurity and self esteem issues

I bought those gel pillows and they also heat up but what does work is those small Milex air coolers blowing onto the gell pillow. When the power goes out at night they are very effective at helping with sleeping. Those gel pillows are very comfortable indeed.

It’s misery, I always wonder how people that work all day in the sun survive, road workers, garden services and on top of that lots of those poor guys go home to a metal shack and have to sleep in insane near stifling temps.

Do you have any brand of gel pillow you can recommend?
And which Milex air cooler is it exactly?

Yeah it must be horrible for them. Even people who sleep in PJs in the summer lol. I would probably melt.

I’m exactly the same. Ice cold water right before bed helps a bit.

You drink it or you pour it over yourself?
Drink it, but I’ve also tried cold showers, which doesn’t really work because it backfires. It tells your body to raise your core temperature. That’s the theory anyway, I’ll experiment again this week.

Hmm let me know how that goes. I like cold showers but yeah it doesn't keep you refreshed for too long. I guess by that logic, perhaps a hot shower would make you feel cooler when you get out?

Sometimes I get so hot I take the bottled water next to my bed and just pour it over me right there in the bed lol. Its a nightmare.

I don’t know, I think if your body were that efficient at dumping heat it would be doing it without the need for stimulus because you’re already hot. If you’re cold, it just needs to burn some fat.

I’ve used a spray bottle of water on myself at night lol. I think the real issue is all the stored heat in the roof and walls that radiates into the house at night, that can’t easily escape because the windows and doors are closed. It’s much cooler outside.

But anyway, I’ll try the cold showers and let you know.

Feeling a bit better. Things that might be helping:

● Moved my sleep/awake time from 21:00/05:00 to 22:00/06:00. Same hours, but seems to work better. A 23:00/07:00 might be even better but a bit impractical with work etc.
● Phone off early & reading a book before bed. Helps get my mind off of stuff.
● Stopped all evening supplements (magnesium etc.) except for L-Theanine (250mg). Take this about 30mins / 1hr before bed.
● Read something about slow bowel movements making people tired. Added a daily glass of psyllium husk (about 1 tsp mixed in water). Chug that down after lunch.
● I was only drinking one cup of coffee at around 10:00 but cut that out completely.
● Drinking more water during the day.

Thx for all the replies & input.
