My biggest issue with over the counter sleep aids, especially melatonin and antihistamines such as promethazine; they don't help me get to sleep, I wake up multiple times, and then can't get back to sleep. By the time the sun comes up, I can barely function without copious amounts of coffee, so I prefer not to take them. Benzodiazepines do work well for me without making me feel groggy, but they require a script, so when I do get them, I try and make them last as long as possible. Benzos should only really be used as a last line option though, as they can be extremely addictive and potentially cause even more issues if you take them daily, so I take them infrequently and only at times when I really need to take them, maybe 2-3 times a month at most.
