Getting set for a wireless war

I doubt whether their prices will be any better than what is being offered ATM. They "might" use the neotel approach to pricing...

Seeing that it's telkom I doubt the prices will be lower than vodacom and mtn's current pricing.

o dear, telkom 3G? maybe actually getting your adsl pricing lower first is better?

The idiots! They had a monopoly on voice and they failed to connect the country. They got adsl and they failed to connect the country. They got wimax license and generous spectrum allocation and they are failing to connect the country. Now they are looking at 3G. Do they think that is a solution to their problems? What is is happening is lack of leadership. They are now envying Vodacom and MTN, but they don't realize that what they have is much much better. If only they would work on improving it and rolling it out. Also, they don't have to necessarily punish the user with such high prices.

Let me guess... Joburg, Durban and Cape Town only...

"He says Telkom is investigating technologies that would enable it to deliver fibre optic to the home." LOL LOL WHAHAAHHAA!!
No Telkom, dont share your wet dreams with us man.

This should be good news. If it is like Telkom's other bandwidth packages (All Access) then you could probably use your user account at home on DSL and also when you move arround using 3G, and that is much cheaper than vodacom or mtn prices.

Can you imagine if the topup gigs were R70 like with ADSL!! Sweet!

Thanks everyone for your amazing suggestions. I'm sure you understand the telecomms industry better than anyone else. These morons obviously need to hire you and put you in charge of all the decision-making.

Honestly, this forum is just becoming a little basement club for passive aggressive people to bitch about telecomms, like a bunch of religious zealots.

How about all the people who are constantly having their copper stolen? This is a life saver for them. Mobile data is now the killer application for business. I'm sure pricing will be highly competitive, since this is a fixed-line replacement technology. Before you get your forked tongue wagging, why don't you wait and see what packages are offered.

There is no need to resort to swearing and using stars to 'disguise' your bad language.

This could be very interesting if Telkom charge the same for 3G data as they do for WiMax and ADSL. Sure they may make the rental high but that could be great for people who use lots of bandwidth.
MTN and Vodacom are rapping their customers with their data prices.

The nice thing is most people don't care about keeping their data sim number which means that they can easily jump ship to Telkom if it looks more attractive. That will certainly put pressure on MTN and Vodacom.

This can indeed be interesting - and Telkom never called their WiMax offering 'WiMax', they called it 'Wireless'. Maybe this should give some idea about pricing? At this years' Telkom results the company also indicated that one can expect aggressive pricing on the wireless side - lets hope it happens.

Gaz mate, we are basing their expected pricing and performance on what they historically and currently offer. As such I dont see them making much of a dent as they will come in more expensive than the other 3G players. Remember Telkom is all about "Recovering Costs". The fact that they are still "Recovering Costs" on SAT3 even though they never paid for it and it has long since recovered its construction costs multiple times over means nothing to them.

They put themselves into the position of most hated company around and they are the only ones who can change that. Instead of taking the 14 odd billion a year in profit and keep prices high due to a "lack of international bandwidth" they could have taken some of that and dropped in a few more undersea cables. The country wouldnt be in the position its in now and people might just have believed their press releases. Instead they chose the "bleed the country dry" approach and now they are reaping the benefits.

PPl on this forum praise good offers and bitch about bad ones, may we do that? is that okay with you?

How can mobile technology be a fixed-line replacement technology at this stage? What wireless technology exist that can replace fixed-line? Please look at latency before you comment.

No i'm not a telecommunication expert and I do not wish to work for any of these companies, I’m a client and i want good products & service. Is that okay with you?

They may very well offer extremely good offers but wouldn’t it have been better to keep rolling out Wimax as they have already started and increasing their footprint could help also its a superior technology in most ways. Telkom's core business is to be a fixed line operator, why not focus on that first and bring great innovative offers to the market before moving on?

I only use stars to "disguise" my swearing because the filter on this forum wont let me exercise my right to freedom of speech. If there was no filter there would have been no stars ;)

Agreed.

Gaz, yes we are passive aggressive people who bitch about telecomms in our little basement club, cause, the thing is, telkom ain't listening. And yes, most of us have played starcraft... :D

Like Vegeta said, we have the right to freedom of speech. Deal with it.

based on telkom past performances and nevermind pricing, i am not holding my breath on this one.

Telkom

The only good thing would be replacing the copper with fibre
That would be the best option
