Google Maps Navigation for Android now available in SA

Gave it a whirl today. It'll get you where you want to go, but I noticed 2 things that really didn't impress me:

  1. Map data isn't always accurate. My folks stay in a road that runs into a cul-de-sac on top of a koppie. On the opposite side of the koppie there are a few houses that fall on said road, but they're reached by a 2-track concrete driveway up the slope. This does not connect to the actual road on the other side. It wanted to route me over the koppie. I also ended up in a service road alongside Ontdekkers which, according to Google, doesn't exist.
  2. The routing is woeful in places. It would have me drive roads I wouldn't dream of going down, through industrial areas and whatnot. Sygic and CoPilot route along more logical roads much more readily.

The onboard suppliers don't need to be too concerned... yet. Must say though, the StreetView snapshot of your destination once you're within a 100m is a nice touch.

I just pre cached jhb central,i had 8.9Mb used before that now its sitting on 16Mb so since jhb central is a dense area i would imagine that to be close to the max data usage per point.(i.e 7MB)

Oh yes,GREAT STUFF GOOGLE!NOW MY PHONE CAN DO ALMOST EVERYTHING I COULD EXPECT OF IT!Just waiting for the x10i gingerbread update to be approved by sa networks(rest of the world has it already) and I'm sorted....

Been using the Gingerbread since last friday go on to XDA developers you can get it there.

Tested the Navigation its really good, will be using it often

I've been using it for a year now, I really think the navigation overall is already way better then other providers.

Routing is in need of improvement, but google will now have the crowd in sa from which to source all kinds of things, like traffic, routes...

The added street view just places it in a league of its own.

And to think it's free! Thank you Google!!!

Is there a way to load the maps to the mass storage memory (cache) using a PC and USB connection?

You can always install the SDK, run the Maps on the emulator and download cache em using the app. I would have to guess you can copy that data cross to your phone using a USB, so in short, yes but i doubt it was the answer you where looking for.
