Google Maps Navigation for Android now available in SA

I was about to buy the Copilot app for myself and sell my tomtom, well now i can sell my tomtom and have money left for a beer :D.

Same here, almost bought CoPilot last night. Tell me is there a way to download the Google Maps to the phone first so one can still use navigation in an area without reception?

I still am a Nokia fanboi - looking forward to Anna and then Belle upgrades coming to my N8. But when I upgrade in January I am not sure what to take and I have my doubts on how well Nokia will pull off the Windows Phone 7 thing.

Maybe call me a more realistic Nokia [-]fanboi[/-] supporter?

With google rolling out this kind of navigation on Android it is pretty sure Nokia will have to spark with Ovi Maps on WP7

WP7 is not as bad as you might think, I just dont like the design and lack of controle/cutomizations but it is no ware close to what Windows Mobile 6.5 was. Also as a dyslexic I just can not handle words going off the page(Metro UI), as it makes it really hard for me to read.

Yes I am a Android Fanboy but I can clearly see why some people might prefer WP to say iOS or Android.

In Maps goto Menu -> Labs, and Enable Pre Cached Map Area.

Then the area you want to load just Long press on the map and go more options, and select Preload Area. It will preload a 16KM/10 Mile radius from the highlighted section, or you could plan a ruite and preload the map data for the route.

I've precached a few areas, like most of Joburg/Pretoria, Durban and surrounds, and CT. My problem is that, this weekend I'm driving down to Durbs. I cant cache the route from Joburg to Durbs because its too big. So now what? I guess it will have to use 3G the whole down to get the maps it needs. Need to buy a car holder for my phone though, what I have noticed is that my phone acquires a GPS lock far quicker than my TomTom, and can even do so under several layers of concrete.

Recent updates allow Google Maps/Navigation to cache map data.
Just ensure you have the current version from market.

YES!!! It works beautifully! Just about time to say good-bye to the Garmin.

Navigation with satellite imagery is the hsit!

All well and good, but routing is still done via the cloud. If you go off your route, you're buggered until you establish a data connection again.

•Search in plain English

How does 'plain' English differ from English as we know it, 'Americanised-English' or even Old English ?

Impressive. What kinda phone do you have?

This is great news. Been waiting for this feature. I didn't know you could hack it before.

Funny how excited I am right now, having it legally!!!

/me starting up Navigation to go buy a copy of Windows 7.

:)

For those who want to know ;-)

You change the VOICE settings in Android settings - not in MAPS
Go to Settings - Voice Input Output - Text To Speech Setting - Tick "Always Use My Settings" to override default setting

I switched to UK English

I'm sorry, am I missing something? This has been available for ages already...

This is true, i checked now and ive had this update for a while now, prolly a few weeks back.. not sure on exact dates, or time period for that matter but its been long

LG Optimus 2X running CM7. Its an import only phone. Also has buggy as hell stock firmware, hence CM7.

After I enable that pre-cache option, how do I go about caching it? Do I have to literally zoom/navigate through the areas I want and then it caches that?
