Google Nexus 4 uncertainty for SA

What a stupid decision IMO :(
I mean $300 for a high end phone? That's practically unheard of and would really open up the market of smartphones in SA who do not want/can afford a R8000 phone (I mean I can buy a PC for the prices these phones are going for in SA crazy). I wouldn't think twice to buy this phone if it comes to SA if it is comparably priced. What else can one get for ca. R3000-R3500? Just blackberries and underpowered android 2.1 phones.
If this is true, it's because the networks cannot slash expensive contracts with this phone as it is unlocked and people would just buy it on prepaid due to the price.

This phone has the potential of ending blackberries grip in people who want a smartphone, but cannot afford current android devices, this phone is just so much better IMO.

Please LG, for the love of smartphones! In any case it will probably be quite a bit more expensive here due to our "3rd world tax" :(

Yes LG, good call, the more expensive option is always better for a 3rd world country. I wonder if Google SA would be able/ willing to bring these phones in?
 
Was the original Nexus phone ever available on contracts from the cellphone networks?
 
One minute we are meant to act and think globalisation and next minute we get kicked in the...when we want to be part of the global world by the likes of Google,Apple,and up until last week Microsoft and countless others.Come on Google open up the Google Store(Play Store) so we can buy these cool gadgets directly.And f**k LG for such a stupid decision,I hope bites them where the sun don't shine.
 
Hope the Devices option in the Play Store become available for us here in Dark South of Africa.But a real silly decision from LG SA which could have given them a little extra market share and improve their image of their mobile phone division.

The Galaxy Nexus was available here, on contract and to buy outright.. for quite expensive prices considering it was also $300 unlocked.

So many south african businesses seem to thing the only way to make more money is to up the price. It's like they have no ability to think laterally. Telkom- uuuuuuh, all our subscribers is moving to 3g. lets up our prices to make up the difference.

What LG cant seem to comprehend is that the optimus G puts them in line with the competition, and given the choice most people are not going to go with LG. The Nexus on the other hand blows the competition out the water and they will more than make up for (and surpass) the initial loss of profit with sheer numbers, not to mention they will be building a fantastic brand presence. LG SA- there is a reason head-office agreed to produce these things and every other country will be jumping at the opportunity to supply them.

Actually at launch last november it was selling for $649 unlocked ($299 on a 2 year contract in the states) then google started selling them online and dropped the price to $399 and then $349 at the Jellybean launch. They never reached SA at those prices though... besides grey imports.

Also this is whole article is basically based on the word of a virgin mobile representative. No offence to Virgin but I won't freak out about it until someone from LG actually says that it's not coming to SA or one of the bigger players says that it's not

I registered to get on board this conversation. I am EXTREMELY interested in this Nexus 4, never have I wanted to buy a new gizmo so much. The Price point is just mind blowing, because it is bar none, the best phone I have heard of, for cheaper than your average mid-ranger. That being said, I believe that the price will be higher here if LG do officially bring the phone here. So my question to you guys is, is importing a product like this a "safe" and viable option? Never tried something like that before. Think it is a good idea? Any plans on how to get this device for as cheap as possible? Thanks!

So it has not been confirmed by LG South Africa which is good. Lets hope they don't miss a trick. :wtf:

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if LG confirmed that it wasn't coming or only next year feb (whilst they pushed the Optimus G here) or something alone those lines, but until they do I'll be optimistic and hope that google makes them distribute it worldwide!
 
I think LG SA has been very short-sighted on this one. I loss confidence in LG a long time ago. But with the specs and price of this phone together with the backing of Google, I would haven taken this as an opportunity to reassess their phones. I've sent a webmail to them expressing their mistake if they are not bringing this phone to SA. I said this could have been an opportunity for them to increase their market share in the SA cellphone market. Just browsing the internet now, I found an interesting survey on the market share in South Africa. See this link: http://www.worldwideworx.com/nokia-blackberry/ - LG currently only holds a 5% share in South Africa. An excerpt reads: “But the prospects for Motorola, LG and Sony are bleak: all three are expected to drop below 1%, unless something drastic happens to revitalise the brands.” This phone is what they could have used to revitalise their brand. Maybe more of us disappointed forum participants should write on their webmail. Just be nice about it. It's been said that every complaint shares the feelings of 100 disgruntled people. I want this phone in SA so we need to make sure it happens.

Fully agreed, this phone will be a game changer, not just for LG but for the entire phone market, which is hopelessly overpriced here in SA.
