Showoff. How did you get it and what was the total cost.

The courier was expensive and slow, I ordered it on launch weekend.

I ordered a white Nexus 5 32GB through a NY VPN on the 2nd.

It just left the UPS facility on its way to the shipment forwarding company in Oregon (I use Shipito + Oregon address = no sales tax). I just used a local Visa credit card and lied to Google Play with Shipito's forwarding address as the order billing address, didn't fully expect the payment to pass, but it did.

The total is 412.99 (Play Order) + ~44 (Shipment forwarding, TNT Express) = ~457 USD which is about R4600. Local tax will probably be either nothing or R200-ish, I lie on the customs declaration.

Expecting it to arrive Monday, 11 November.

The total came out to about R4800.

Others have recommended Postbox Courier, they're probably better.

@Digitalwolf what a rip-off! R7499.99 on a $349 phone it does not take a genius to see they are taking the Piss...

To be fair, only Google is charging $349. All other US carriers are apparently charging what Google charges them (i.e. they are making no profit on the sale of the phone) - which is $450. Even taking that into account, the price is still far too high. Orange's price is more reasonable.

I've send some further enquiries to FNB, Amazon and Digital Wolf:

FNB said:
We unfortunately cannot advise on if and when FNB will offer the Nexus 5 to our customers. If this product does become available to our customers, it will be advertised on our website.

Amazon said:
Unfortunately, we don't know when the Google Nexus 5 Phone will be available for purchase again.

While we receive new inventory often, it's difficult for us to predict when a specific product will be available. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and encourage you to check back periodically to review the availability for this product.

Once available we may be able to ship Google Nexus 5 Phone to South Africa. To confirm this is the case, please add the item to your Shopping Cart and proceed to checkout. If the item isn't eligible to ship to a certain location, you'll see an error message when entering the address in our order form.

The D821 model is quite a bit more expensive than the D820 model on average, and to add to matters the stock levels are not very consistent hence the increased price. We're hoping to see the price come down considerably in the new year.

We only do orders on demand at the moment, we are waiting till the new year before ordering stock -

We can source accessories for the phone, the delivery time is sometimes slightly longer but we will usually send the phone as soon as it arrives and then the accessories later.

I can understand digtalwolf's point as some of the offers listed on Amazon are simply just outrageous. I can also understand that they have to add their profit margin and import costs, which is challenging for a small business. But I agree, the price is just too much atm as for a bit extra you can look at a Galaxy S4 instead. Going to keep an eye on their pricing in any case.

Which is also something that have made me wondered -- what is the correct price range for a 32Gb Nexus 5 in SA? R6000-R7000? anything more doesn't make sense to me.

At least I saw the case I would like to have: it's the Spigen Slim Armor case. A bit bulky, but it is a soft TPU case which is what I like:

Just very annoyed with Amazon atm. First time I'm trying to use them in a long time, their site is so difficult to navigate as there is just too many listings of the same thing, too many 3rd party offers which I don't know at all in order to trust. And I can't find any of their international listings shipping to SA :(

Out of interest, If I can get a couple international version N5's would anyone be interested? I would guess the price would be around R6000 for a 32GB, and about R5000 for a 16GB.

So, not to tempt fate here, but my order has not been cancelled yet (Google would usually cancel it two days after I placed it). Holding thumbs that it actually ships on Tuesday. If it does, I'll be ordering four more to sell.

Why would someone take all the risk and associated crap and not put on a profit?

While not meaning to sound as direct, you are correct.

I will need to cover the cost of the shipping as well, so no way can I sell it at cost price if I do go down that road. But the prices quote above by stoozak- those sound reasonable enough.

Ahh ok, so we're looking at R8000 for the 16GB? :p
