No need to install the SDK, just use this.

I did a bit of a manual process (found somewhere on Reddit):

download factory image hammerhead-mra58k-factory-52364034.tgz[1] & unpack
have adb drivers installed & cmd open
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-hammerhead-hhz12k.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-hammerhead-m8974a-2.0.50.2.27.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot reboot

New nexus owner... coming from an S5.
Got the phone on Saturday, can only say I wish I had done it sooner.
Will be reading this from page 1 to get as much info as I can... but for now, I am loving it.

Will have a look, thanks. When I got my Nexus 4 I thought that phone was the bees knees, certainly the best phone I ever had. Need to replace it.

Might be a battle to find a brand new one but couple used ones floating around for sale. I got lucky that the one I found is in excellent shape. Guy also has a N6 for sale but opted for the N5 for now.
 
Having read up to page 64 on this thread...it appears that the LTE issue is something that the D820 version is stuck with..is that correct?
As in..it cant use LTE in SA?

I enabled band 4 on mine following a thread on xda and it works great!

Thanks so very much. Am now running Marshmallow uploadfromtaptalk1444757041854.jpg

The only issue is that I can't restore my SMS backup using SMS Restore & Backup. uploadfromtaptalk1444757090609.jpg

Very frustrated, I do have backup .xml files, but just stuck there not restoring.
