Google Phone in SA

Already had one for a while, I'd suggest waiting for the G2....
 
Was the core idea behind Android not cheaper devices based on a cheaper open source OS platform? What's happening here is wrong MTN. I took issue with Vodacom ripping us off with their overpriced exclusive iPhone deals ... but this is worse IMO. MTN is pulling a VC iPhone trick on us using an open source OS.

Now that's just not true. Android isn't NEARLY stable enough, bug-free, working, to actually be used on most HTCs.

Indeed, if that WAS the case, I wouldn't have gone through the trouble of getting a G1 imported. Will still see if it was worth it - R3300 including shipping.

I'll basically have a G1 on weekender for a R800 pay-in since I didn't want the phone I got on the last upgrade and got a reduced subscription.

What part is not true? I said the Android ROM is available [via the community] on most other HTCs [and probably other similar phones] , the bug/stability/functionality issues are to be expected if you do this kind of ROM-flashing. This does not make it any less true. The same applies with people fooling around with Windows Mobile 6.5 on their HTCs.....

Everything works except GPS, Bluetooth, and compatibility and bugs with some applications.

So with such reduced functionality, why would you run Android?

I have seen so many have such faith in HTC and all it ever ends in is tears. HTC hardware is substandard IMO.

Just go Blackberry, it just works.

It's basically: "Use it, Don't use it"...or you can pay through your teeth for another phone simply to have this OS. If you got the cash to burn, go for it , then this obviously won't apply.

The HTC Dream does not have anything hardware wise that's different or better than the HTC Diamond/Touch/Pro/HD. In fact there's areas where it's in fact LIMITED to begin with [worth investigating comparing the HTC Dream vs. HTC Touch Pro ]

Also keep in mind the vid is almost 6 months old and the time it takes for the community to update these ROMs....

R529/month isn't too bad for R350/month including 100MB of data and 50 sms's. I'd consider it if it weren't for the Blackberry Bold and Storm offers which imo are better. The design of the G1 could be much better.
 
I don't get the point of those qwert keyboards on HTC's. Just a gimmicky marketing thing IMO.
 
Maybe I was expecting too much, but I am rather underwhelmed by this offer. Similar in a way to the iPhone offer from VC. The data caps are so low it takes away a lot of the phone's appeal.
 
i can't say i like the looks of it, also tad bit expensive i'll stick to my nokia96..soon

G2 was exclusively build for Vodaphone.. so you will ahve to get tit form Vodacom if they bring it on.. given that they already have couple of high end phones to 'flogg' don't hold your breath...

Most of those willing to go for this phone are already informed about it ... these extortionist tactics are sickening. :mad:

Depends how much you want that slide-out keyboard. The 1.5 build should be available on the G1 as well, so software would be pretty much identical.
