Got 9K to spend - which LCD?

ok GTI07, here's all I can say to help you though.

1st of all, when removing R9000 out of your back pocket for a TV try to ask the people you are buying from to please show you what it looks like atleast. Why did you not even *check* what DStv looks like?

2ndly, For TV, a plasma is gonna look better than any Super-Full-HD-1080p-LCD.

3rdly, SD Television is just that - SD. Standard Definition ain't never gonna look like DVD Quality. try resizing a 32x32 Windows icon to lets say a 128x128 image.....you will clearly see that it is IMPOSSIBLE to do this without quality loss.

hope that makes sense.

I've currently shopping around myself with pretty much the exact budget that you have. Done my share of research on TV's. Here's my 10c worth.

Contrast Ratio is a big plus. You should be gunning for as high a number as possible here.
Sinotec is cheap for 2 reasons (IMO). 1) it is manafactured here thus cheaper. 2) You get close to what you pay for. Yes it is a good bang for buck tv (was considering one myself) but its cheaper for reasons other than being locally produced.....

If you look at Game and places like Kay Makan, Govan Mani etc, there are some Great prices on 32" (if you're willing to drop in size) Full HD LCD TV's.

Other things to bare in mind is in SA, even with a HD PVR, you wont be using your 1080p. Sadly its currently limited to 720p which any HD READY tv supports. The only place you'll actually see the benefit is when playing games (assuming you're connecting a PC) or playing Bluray movies as mentioned. There are also rumblings that 1080p is Not the way to go for SD. Still have to read up on that, but apparently it makes the viewing quality on SD bad.

Now if you're still reading this, congratulations :)
Seriously though, here's my input on tv models.....

Samsung LA32A550 - Very nice tv. Full HD, 30 000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, supports pip.
Samsung LA32B530 - The 2009 replacement of the model above (5 Series). 40 000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, SADLY loses the pip support.

LG LG50 32" - Another Full HD offering. 50 000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, pip.

Those are the models for under R10K.
If you can for out a little extra, I think its the Sony W or Z series that offers you the motionflow (100mhz) which makes TRULY noticable difference.

Thats pretty much where my focus has been.... Not sure if it helps you any, but hope there was something worth taking away.

Cheers

This is what i have been looking for, thanks alot for the input bud, much appreciated. Will have a look at those 2 models you suggested. 32" is no problem for me, will def consider depending on pic quality.

It was a Sunday, after 2pm, never really researched what i should have been looking for, should have asked to check DSTV quality, no i know though
I get what you saying about SD TV, it's just that, SD!! But some LCD's display SD much better than "others", it is the others i am interested in now.

Keep tabs on the 40" Samsung 1080p set, I saw it posted for R9999 at Game the other week, its bound to drop to that price again soon. Its well worth the extra R1000.

Deals no longer on though :( That's the way it goes though, you either bite the bullet and be happy with what you have or spent your life waiting till the next big deal.

NP bud. Glad that finger excercise was of some use :)
Good luck with your decision. To branch off what Fudzy said, there's apparently meant to be a reduction coming on LCD's soon. But soon is any man's guess. If you can wait, wait, if not, there are good deals to be had....

Thanks for the heads up bud, any chance you got the model number?

u sure u can use the voucher towards your purchase?

if so it seems like a good deal, i think the S - series was on special for R11999 a few weeks ago, so its the same price for a better model?
