No connection again this morning(posting this on gprs). I am connected to the towwer but cannot authenticate my pppoe connection. The same problem I had a week or two ago when my account was also a problem..

I guess lightning will get the blame.:D
 
the local agent explained how a routerboard got damaged and they are running 4 different high sites through a rb400 series - aparently too many customers connecting through the board and it is working too hard... Its been like this since November when I started measuring.

He says they are waiting for the 600 series routerboard - I am sure it does not take 3 months to arrive. Maybe if they visit uniterm direct they can pick one up - I see they are on special. But who am I to give advice. I am jsut the customer.

The agent put me back to 512k, but I still get 19% packet loss.

Thats a consumer board, its not the type of thing you put into a highsite!
The only way a 400 series would handle load is if you have very few clients connected to it.

Its not hard to get hold of a 600 series RB unless they are looking for a higher level one.

Unfortunately having a higher speed connection does very little to affect packet loss and latency, so the whole idea of moving you to a 512k connection will do very little to help with that!
 
Keep in mind that these high pings are caused by the fact that I'm pinging over a VPN (From Ireland to South Africa IS DSL). In reality the hops are about 3ms each, and there are 4 wireless hops in this.

Hop 2 is my VPN.
3-6 are over the Wug.
Its also peak period on the Wug, so the link between 4 and 5 is heavily saturated, hence the slighty elevated ping.
Keep in mind that the hop between 4 and 5 is possibly the busiest link on the Wug, and the one with the worst performance due bad to noise at both endpoints (its a popular route with the WISPs, from one end of JHB to the other)

And after all of that.

60 packets transmitted, 60 received, 0% packet loss, time 59216ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 277.242/324.163/678.003/59.947 ms

No packetloss!

If we can do it, with 0 budget or funding, so can a WISP.
But they don't... <Insert reasons here>

See thats what our links on ELWUG are like, we *very* seldom drop a packet.
Latency is not such a big thing as that gets fine tuned to cater for the best throughput/most stable ping.

Someone can correct me if im wrong on this, but it sounds like a backhaul problem to me.
There are two parts to the highsites:
1. The visible connection between you and the site
2. The link between Highsites or the main ISP(know as a backhaul)

So its possible you are connected to the tower but something on the backhaul side or at the ISP is down.
 
:mad::mad::mad: Phoned Screamer on the 0861106161 and the oke on that side while I was talking just slapped the phone down. :mad::mad::mad: I just got in "Hi ***** here. Just want to know if there is a problem with PTA North tower" *SLAPPED PHONE DOWN* Not good for customer service. Since then tried 5x times no answer. I know they ignore me now because Screamer do have CLI. I am really getting ticked off now. Guy is lucky I did not catch his name …………..

I've had this problem quite a few times now. The last time it seems it was an account problem because it came right soon after speaking to their accounts dept.

But being told "its your signal" does not amuse me at all.:D

What kind of problems are you having? If I remember correctly the PTA North towers link through Wonderboom? Could be wrong, but maybe our problems stem from the same source?:D

Very slow again since this afternoon. Also I see my WAN ip is till different from what it used to be. Anybody have any ideas on this?:D

Okay but seriously, the wan IP is it not dynamic? If it is then it should change quite often.
 
The 196.x range normally has is related to diginet and Megalines or other MPLS techs.
The 41.x range is normally assigned to ADSL ...
so both are external IP's which means radius is working, but either screamer is having problems with their lines and are trying to use a DSL connection to keep things afloat or there is some other silly problem.
But the fact that radius is assigning you and *external* IP tells me that everything on your side is correct and something is wrong on their side.

The last time I pointed this out to the techie he could not understand how I could establish this and sounded very confused.

When asking about it on this forum I got no response whatsoever.:D
 
Can anyone get through to Screamer? I tried phoning their offices and get disconnected straight away and when I email them, Gmail sends me a delivery failure notice.
 
Hi there

I am afraid this weather has been keeping us all busy which is why I have been scarce on this site. Firstly Rebel we have a number of sources of bandwidth so that if one goes down we can continue supplying. We have changed some of the Pta clients to our Neotel pipe which is the 41.xx.xx WAN ip. This really should not be affecting your connection in any way except possibly to interupt a torrent or two when we do the change over;) What is your connection performance like now?
tco21 I have just called the support centre and got through straight away so I am not sure what happened when you called. If you are still having a problem then PM me and I will try and sort it out.
