I haven't bought one - I can't decide if I actually need one or not. Scratch that - I know I do not NEED one - it is about do I actually want one. And I don't want one.

Stupid peer pressure confusing me. All the other guys got one so I must? I don't think so...

+1 did the same thing
 
Hmmm.... now I see that to get some of the more desirable apps on Apple TV 4 it must be sideloaded (e.g. Moonlight), and the only way to do that is via Xcode.

I might just go buy 1.

I already have a Roku and Android TV.

Grrrr, already have a chromecast that was bought and only used for 5 minutes of testing and is just lying around now. Have a feeling the appletv will be the exact same, just more expensive.

Called the gateway store and ID isn't needed. They also confirmed this is the 3rd gen.

EDIT: I see that they have both generations on the website for R1399. So the store at gateway probably doesn't know about this.

Do you perhaps have a screen shot of both generations at R1399?
