Long story short - I was given a batch code to run to switch of the Win 10 updates

Have been assured this WILL work ... (where have I heard that before? but I'm desperate, will try anything) ... but now I have run in to problem #2 my PC skills do not extend to knowing how to implement this.

Here's an effective, convenient solution: windows_update_toggle.bat
Just run the script again to block or enable update notifications and diag

I've also added a Notification-only subset: windows_update_notification_only_toggle
Just run the script again to block or enable notifications-only

This is probably the safest, smartest solution around, that does not fight Windows for control out in the open (registry process-only blocking method, not messing with file permissions, not altering tasks, not disabling services)

So please go slowly and tell me how to. I can follow instructions if you ELI5 them.

Everlasting gratitude shall flow in your general direction if this works.

WUMT, which originally appeared on the*Wilders Security Forumsin October 2015, comes from an anonymous Russian translator who goes by "Mr. X."

I aint trusting no Russians....

Others feel the same way:

CAUTION: I looked at WUMT several month ago, and decided not to recommend it. The problem isn’t with the tool itself, which appears to work well, and has garnered praise from many corners. The problem is with its pedigree. The developer(s) isn’t/aren’t identified, except by their My Digital Life forum handles @stupid_user and @shewolf. There’s no web site for the product, and no way to contact the developer(s) directly. As best I can tell, apparently, the developers are in Russia, and their primary support contact, Mr. X, is in Mexico.

As I mentioned back in August, I got in touch with @shewolf who was pleasant and knowledgeable, but I didn’t get any details about WUMT’s source – who built it, who maintains it, how to get in touch should things go wrong, other than posting to Mr. X on MDL.

All of those were – and are – big red flags for me. I have no evidence of aberrant behavior, but I just don’t trust the product well enough to recommend, or use, it.

And it still doesn't work.

Problem is, if you are running the Home version of Win10, Windows update will automatically install whatever updates are available for your system. Then if you happen to run WUMT, you will get the same updates, and, should you wish to install them, you will have installed the same update(s) twice. You have no option to prevent WU from installing updates in the Home version. In the Pro version, you can set WU to show you what updates are available but you have to click the 'download' then the 'install' icon before anything is installed. This gives you the opportunity to check via WUMT to see if you get the same updates as WU offers (you do, and sometimes more than that if there are driver updates, etc.)

And would make matters even worse on the data front, if you did use it to update, by doing everything twice.

It does work, im still on build 1703.

Did you select notification mode in WUMT?

2. Do you have Win 10 HOME because that makes all the difference.
Most of clever guys upgraded to the Win10 Pro.
Win 7 Pro/Ultimate + DAZ, upgrading to Win10 Pro, activating online.

If you care about dodgy software, it is difficult to get clean, legitimate copy of DAZ as Google removed all legitimate links on the request of Microsoft. However is not important if you do DAZ on a fresh installation and keep it away from your local LAN during the upgrade and activation. Once Win10 Pro is activated online, you can wippe out the hard drive and do clean installation.
