HDTV Choice

Sorry.. I tend to agree with Dolby on this one..

You HAVE to compare sets because you don't buy a general technology, you buy a specific set that implements a technology in a certain way.

Kay now compare a 40" Series 5 50Hz LCD vs a 42" Series 4 plasma for TV/sport.

wow you guys giving it horns here... :)

can I please ask something here...

I'm on the verge of buying a Sony 32" full HD LCD (http://www.sony.co.za/product/kdl-32ex400) which I'm going to have connected to my PC to watch movies and series (also gonna play the odd game), and also to my DSTV to watch the odd rugby game and tennis.

Your thoughts?

no fighting now!!! :D

Have you read?

Plasma is superior for motion, black level, white level, gray level, gaming, static images, brightness, fall off points and every other catagory. Ever.

You mentioned tennis. Going to be k@k on entry-mid range LCD with 50Hz as with most sport involving balls in motion. You need 100+Hz on LCD for decent sport/motion and cheapest 32" 100+Hz is about R8500.

Just go into the shop and see for yourself. Simple. :)

I must be honest this has crossed my mind as my friend has a plasma and tennis looks awesome on there (in SD) where LCD seems to look a bit :erm: Is that because of the refresh rate?

So would it be possible to spend the same amount and get a plasma full HD?

Whoa. Who would have thought that when we have clowns here saying a 50Hz LCD will be better for TV/sport than a 600Hz plasma?

Yes it's because of plasma's fast response time. There is no artifacting/motion blur, which you get with LCD.

So would it be possible to spend the same amount and get a plasma full HD?

Game somewhere (hopefully all stores) has/had the Samsung 50" full HD plasma + Blu-ray player for R11,999. I'm guessing if you gave them back the Blu-ray player you could knock around R1000 off the price.

i srsly cant afford that... :( My budget is around R5500

:(

if I upgrade to HD dstv then that would be fine on LCD right?

Then get the Samsung 42" PS42C430 at around R5600.

It's HD, but from viewing distance you won't be able to tell the difference from FHD.

I have the PS42C450. Same panel. I am still jaw-dropped at how awesome Alice and Avatar 1080p rips look.

The picture would be much better, but you will still have motion blur problems, since your budget only caters for entry-mid LCD/non 100+Hz LCD.

Ok ok ok ...

My 'thing' has always been that LCD isn't nearly as bad as people (read : Postman) try make out. He seems very intent on persuading everyone to buy a plasma and you really need to sift through what he says to find anything of value. When you add the fact that he's never had an LCD, he's anti LCD/pro plasma debates lose credibility.

That said - he's right on the motion of the budget doesn't extend to a 100hz LCD. A plasma would more than likel be a better option than a 50hz LCD screen.

True. I saw this for myself this weekend in a store that had a 42" Philips LCD placed next to a Samsung Plasma of the same siza. The motion on the plasma is as real as reality gets and the glossy screen on the plasma delivers softer, deeper and more natural colours.
