Headphones Recommendation

It's really not an issue. I have a pair of SR 80's lying around. They're so small/light, you don't even feel them. I find them very comfortable, personally. They're a superb option, value for money being the primary focus.

Obsolete design IMO, uncomfortable in comparison and not conducive to lengthy listening (sometimes I go 8 hours+). I hear you on the value part though.

You're welcome to your opinion and of course it's dependant on the shape of your head, ears and I'm sure a couple of other things, but I've used them for 8+ hours continuously and I've had no issue with regards to comfort. I used to use them at work since they're so compact and easy to store in my bag. I agree that there are better designs available that offer greater comfort and better sound stage, but personally that's a non-issue at this price-point when you want good sound quality. Also, they're well within OP's budget if you know where to shop.

But, OP did request over-the-ear suggestions, so Sennheiser gets my vote as well, provided decent ones can be sourced. The cheaper ones I find uncomfortable, with their padding being a tad too firm for my liking and due to them being a bit smaller, they tend to sit uncomfortably. I wouldn't go for anything less than 518's myself. HD555's would be the ideal but they're well outside of the budget.

I can pick up the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm headphones for R1900 locally

Do you think this is a good buy?

I think these would be the same price as Senn HD 598's if I import but I would prefer closed cans

Any thoughts?

What music?

AFAIK they have quite a bit of emphasis on bass.
 
Rock/Alternative music of course :D

The guy said they normally cost around R2800

I think the bass would be great as I am coming from Senn HD201's and they are lacking in that department and I notice it.

I wonder if I'll notice the difference? ;)
 
Lol definitely. What you driving these with? What're the BD's impedance?

AKG are warmer than Senn and BD I think, which is why people like them for rock.
 
I only have a xonar DG at the moment but when Ivy Bridge finally shows up I'm upgrading to a new motherboard so will get a better xonar card at the same time

My current mobo can't use a pcie soundcard :mad:

I am looking for an amp, but not too expensive, any suggestions?

They will be the 80ohm kind, no way I'm going for the 250/600 ohm versions. Madness :)

He should be fine with a consumer-grade sound card, as they drive headphones up to 100 ohms well enough. Of course, a proper amplifier would be better.

I don't know the brand intimately, but their build quality on this specific tube amplifier I'm currently looking at, is absolutely superb. High quality products being used across the board. I see decent quality caps, resistors, etc. Neutrik connectors all over, which are pretty good quality sockets and I'm yet to find anything significantly better quality. From a manufacturing point of view, it doesn't seem like you can go wrong with it, so unless their actual design work is rubbish, it's probably a good buy. I'd read some reviews just for the sake of it though.
