I heard a report on the radio this morning where she said something like (paraphrasing) she contravened the law to make a point. Not sure that you can sue for wrongful arrest if you agree you broke the law. (But anyway, there's nothing like that in either of the reports I read this morning).

It's apparently illegal to go to the Police station to make enquiries.

It's a new cunning ploy to reduce the crime rate for 2010.

Simply arrest anyone who wishes to lay a complaint or charge. Uses less resources, less chance of being shot, and bring the reported crime stats down while increasing arrest stats.

Last night, police spokesperson Elliot Siyangana said they had met march organisers beforehand, and agreed on conditions including no firearms, no stopping, and no entering alleged drug dealers' premises.

"During the march, one of the protesters violated the conditions by instigating the group, including the mayor, to act illegally at the premises of an alleged dealer," said Siyangana.

Strange that marches by COSATU, where stones are hurled at passers-by vehicles and other similar instances, do not seem to fall under this "instigating the group" category.
Whatever the real truth is behind the story, it cannot be disputed that the transpired events, with the Cape Town Mayor and Political Party leader being arrested, are alarming to say the least.
 
lcbxx, I agree completely about the Cosatu march thing, I was caught in it last year.

It's fcukin' disgusting that Cosatu are allowed to march and turn Hatfield into a bloody zoo, emptying out trash on the roads, breaking shop windows and actually battering cars and PEOPLE on bikes if they get too close. Any of you who witnessed the Cosatu "march" last year will know that something is seriously wrong when cops allow people deface an entire main street while Zille gets arrested for taking part in a legal, peaceful march.

zille has time, she's trying too hard to make a statement, she must just chill... You don' have to be involved in this manner to prove that you against illegal acts such as drugs, & so forth, in such position as she is... She has power to stop DRUG use without matching. What if she was seriously hurt during the march? Anything can happen in the match...

Firstly it's a march not a match.

Second, I think it's refreshing that a politician is not just sitting on their arse delegating work to people below them. We bitch and moan when the guys in charge don't do enough but when they go the extra mile we still find fault. Zille was not at fault here, in fact she should be praised for getting personally involved in the march.
 
Zille was the journalist to break the Steve Biko story. She did not back down to the apartheid government, so I dont see her doing it to this one. Go Zille!

White? How is that relevant? She won't use violence to get what she wants or condone corruption, though those virtues has nothing to do with her skin colour. Try look past her skin colour also.

Agree, she has been in and out of the townships for a long time. They know where the drug dealers are, what is the problem. The police, just like their boss, are corrupt.

As mayor, she was in crossroads last year and was attacked by ANC members, they threw chairs at her and threatened her with a knife. A reaction we should all get used to as normal when the ANC is shown up.
 
Okay so she knowingly broke the law and was arrested and then released without being held...

Seems fair? Good on her getting the attention though...
 
So lets arrest Zuma also next time he knowingly breaks the law. Does that even happen if he were to rape, steal or murder anyone?

Civilised and democratic, if the process is properly implemented by the cops, Zim has a similar policy, they just don't grant permission. :rolleyes:

I seem to remember arrests being made on the scene of those protests and civil cases filed against COSATU for damaged cuased.

Which protests are you taliking about?
