Helen Zille arrested

I seem to remember arrests being made on the scene of those protests and civil cases filed against COSATU for damaged cuased.

Which protests are you taliking about?

Referring to feo:

lcbxx, I agree completely about the Cosatu march thing, I was caught in it last year.

It's fcukin' disgusting that Cosatu are allowed to march and turn Hatfield into a bloody zoo, emptying out trash on the roads, breaking shop windows and actually battering cars and PEOPLE on bikes if they get too close. Any of you who witnessed the Cosatu "march" last year will know that something is seriously wrong when cops allow people deface an entire main street while Zille gets arrested for taking part in a legal, peaceful march.

Sickening.

But remember: Zille was CRIMINALLY charged, that is very different from laying a CIVIL charge. Namely, arrests were not made for criminally contravening the Illegal Gatherings Act.

As mayor, she was in crossroads last year and was attacked by ANC members, they threw chairs at her and threatened her with a knife. A reaction we should all get used to as normal when the ANC is shown up.

Trying to deal in a civilized way with brain-washed zombies will never work.

She said her arrest was political, while one of her party officials asked why the police had detained Ms Zille and not the drug dealers.

Typical, brain-dead morons. You get further in this country being a criminal - just have a look around parliament.

Seriously people, the suspected drug dealers did not break the law in front of a police officer. She did and couldn't expect to get away with it... Hopefully she has brought enough attention down on the drug dealers with her antics to get them arrested as well..

Now instead of hammering on against the cops (who did their job) or against the ANC (WTF?) rather concentrate on pushing for the drug dealers to be arrested and charged..

Oh and this Zim 2 crap is really annoying. Zimbabwe was NEVER anywhere close to being as advanced as South Africa is now... your doom mongering is boring.

So the only bastion that exists in the face of the decrepit and corrupt ANC gets arrested and this is all you have to say? I don't see Mbeki or Zuma or your favourite local ANC councillor getting down and dirty with the 'common' man.

Ag please, Gavin, catch a wake-up call, my china!!

So you do think the police should rather spend all their resources detaining the 'wild & scary' Helen Zille, instead of doing some real police work. The SAPS was out to prove a point & that point being that they work for the ANC and will only allow ANC-alligned trade unions, like COSATU & SATAWU, to march unhindered.

We ARE on the same route as Zimbabwe, just open your newspaper and 'real' reading only starts at page 5, the first 4 pages being about rape, assault, break-ins, people murdered, etc.

Do you think we live in a 'normal' society?

*If you do, all I can say to you - 'ignorance is bliss'.

? bastion my ass... she is a politician just like the rest of them, she will do what she thinks gets her the most votes and that is it...

I have seen more media reports of Zuma mingling with the common man than anyone else, it sure as hell doesn't mean I am going to vote for him...

If she actually gets charged in court then I will be a lot more worried, charges should be dropped and until then I am not going to get my panties in a knot and start packing my bags...

She has said what happened from her side, the cops have given their side and both sides sound fair.

@kingrob - the cops were 'guarding' the march so it's not like they had something better to do. Whether we agree with what Helen was doing or not the fact that she broke the law is not being denied by either side...

From the Gatherings act..
http://www.tpsa.co.za/Acts/Regulation of Gatherings Act - No 205 of 1993.htm

PREAMBLE

WHEREAS every person has the right to assemble with other persons and to express his views on any matter freely in public and to enjoy the protection of the State while doing so;
AND WHEREAS the exercise of such right shall take place peacefully and with due regard to the rights of others:

"gathering" means any assembly, concourse or procession of more than 15 persons in or on any public road as defined in the Road Traffic Act, 1989 (Act No. 29 of 1989), or any other public place or premises wholly or partly open to the air

more than 15 people can be deemed an illegal gathering though if permission was not received prior, I think.

ANC hits back at Zille

True to form.

The Police are nothing more than state political muscle. Despicable. I hear what Gavin is saying that nobody is above the law, including Zille, but why do they (the police) not operate with the same efficiency against known criminals peddling tic to the youth? Why?
They are crooked can be the only answer.
Thabo doesnt even know what tic is that is how 'in touch' he is with everday life in SA.

I said right in the beginning that I think these cops have been paid protection money by the drug dealers... I have never understood how known criminals can keep on doing what they do without being arrested. I have seen it happen all over the world and it just boggles my mind.

bear in mind that "the common man" in South Africa, statistically, would be uneducated, probably unemployed - and have some serious issues and anger over race, entitlement, and zero opportunity for making a decent life for themselves.

So mentioning that Zuma has been mingling with the common man - doesn't mean anything much.
Given that Zuma himself believes you can have a shower and wash off AID's, (which demonstrates that he's frankly quite stupid, and willing to flaunt it) and also seems to represent a highly antagonistic and historically militarized and rather corrupt ethnic tribe (who were used to very good effect by the Apartheid government, to act as a buffer between themselves and the general progressive forces).
The quietly growing view from the US, at least among academics, is that Zuma is a Mugabe in the making. Time will tell.

In the same breath I could answer that Zille proclaiming to being arrested protesting against apartheid is also nonsense. yeah she most probably got arrested but she sure as hell didn't lose her lavish and pampered lifestyle...

I don't trust any politicians... You have to have an open mind when listening to anything they say...

Why am I not surprised. Instead of spending precious time and resources on cathing REAL criminals like murderers, rapists, druglords, hijackers etc etc, the SA police is rather going after "soft" targets like Helen Zille who's only crime is the fact that she's opposed to ANC misrule......

Like any other 3rd world banana republic goverment, the ANC is now using the Police to intimidate it's political opponents, rather than fighting crime. We are on a slippery slope....... :(

Good god man did you not read the thread?

It was an organised march with police protection, they had to be there, she broke the law in front of them, what would you expect them to do..

Personally I think they should be arresting the drug dealers as well but she can't claim innocence in this.

Was the police there to intimidate her, or as protection, cos she's the mayor of Cape Town?

What are you trying to say, Gavin? That all non-ANC marchers should be arrested?

As Gavin asked, did you not read the article?

The march was organised and as usual cops are in attendance, then she overstepped the mark and got arrested (by the sounds of things never even saw the inside of a holding cell), no intimidation.

She is just milking the situation for all its worth.
