Helen Zille arrested

Um it feels like I have stepped into the twilight zone.

They were there to manage the march. Protect the marchers and the civilians. The rules of the march had been set out in the beginning and everyone had agreed. They then knowingly broke the rules and accordingly the law.

This has sweet f*(k all to do with the ANC. It is common logic, Politics, and media sensationalism... Awesome stuff :D

There seems to be a difference of opinion on this.

The rules of the march were clearly set out, Firstly that the marchers were to keep moving, and secondly that designated persons were to present petitions to the alledged drug dealers.

The first person arrested was such a designated person as specified in the rules of the march.

Helen Zille then went to the police station to enquires as to why said person was arrested.

She was then arrested at the police station (not on the march)

Is it now illegal to make enquiries at a police station?
 
This has got everything to do with the ANC. They're basically showing the public that the SAPS is ANC property.

Or it could be a little constable out of his depth and trying to make a point, nah that would be ludicrous.

I once went to a police station to ask why a friend of mine had been arrested. They don't take so well to being questioned, especially when their earlier decision was marginal.

Again it very much depends on who's side you listen to... The original arrest seemed to be from the guy banging on the door which was not allowed. Helen was then arrested for doing a similar thing but her arrest only came later...

I'm not picking sides...

Would you mind showing us anything to back this up apart from

SAPS reports to Government
The ANC has the majority in Government...

What? They knocked on someones door. Clearly the ANC is unaware of what urban terror really is; or, they haven't been given all the details. I promise you, the last time I knocked on someones door without invitation I wasn't detained in a prison cell. This is political and the ANC, as per their reponse, is definitely instigating the situation. In all their infinite wisdom are undeplaying the brute force they used for such a minor incident :mad:

Um the police were in their legal right, it has also been pointed out that she wasn't detained so all in all it was handled well...

I am not a DA or ANC supporter, sorry to break it to you.... The DA does nothing but whine and the ANC could have really done more than they have...

It's customary to knock on the doors of premesis to gain the attention of occupants.

Is this now to become illegal? Is this law going to extend to doorbells and knockers? What about intercom systems?

The designated person was allowed present a memorandium/petition to the occupents of the premises. Normally one knocks.
 
The ANC wanted to prove a point (that they control the police) and I think they succeeded. Well done to the ANC!

Imagine the police starting to make arrests when SATAWU or COSATU strikes and start knocking out car windows, shop windows & steal food, etc. Now that will take some guts!! But I'm afraid all the police who do such a thing, would be without a job the very next day.

It is also customary to obey the law and when asked to move on to actually do so.

Okay here is a question, why can't Helen being the mayor of Cape Town ask the police to arrest the drug dealers?

Isn't she meant to be running that city? Or is it remotely possible that they have no evidence against them yet which is why they have not been arrested?

She was asking them why they had not arrested the drug dealers when they are known to the community and that the community knows exactly where they ply their trade, the response was to lock her up eventually, perhaps she touched more than a gate!
Perhaps she touched a little lazy, corrupt and inept SAPS nerve.

It really does not matter, the legalities of her arrest may be sound but this does not diminish how outrageous the act was considering the situation at the time.

One needs to also ask what brought the mayor of Cape Town to the streets in this way. A total lack of interest by the SAPS to act in the first place would be a safe bet. Enough niggle to get you locked up for knocking on someones gate even ;)
