Ok, so today I get my Wits Alumni card... graduated from there in 2006. I've got access to the libraries now. :D

I remember going to the libraries after 7pm, and downloading Mp3's at speeds that brought tears to my eyes...

So now, I hear they have a 120Mbit connection in place. I'm thinking of upiing my hard drive space on AeroVPS, then head to Wits once a week, and download it all to my laptop.

Then I probably won't need my Mweb uncapped account anymore...

Hmmm, does that make sense to anyone?

I used to love downloading at Uni.. Until I got cuffed for downloading at a couple Mbyte/second.
Remember the admin tapping me on my shoulder saying 'WtF, how are you doing that!?'.

I would ask the admins if you can download at night before you try :)

120MBit would be epic!

It's an access card for Alumni (a person that was a student, and graduated from that particular institution)...

iv pulled at 4.1MBps at campus, found that certain spots are slower and certain spots allows megaupload and rapidshare, have downloaded so many GB that im satisfied with the fees we have to pay. i once downloaded 4GB of anime in less than 1hr. im not sure but think speed were 2.4MBps. (the speedtest is posted somewhere in the forum)

edit: the usual speed at certain spots at campus

Ah fond memories...
Last year the SANReN network (1Gbps links between Uni's and then 10Gbps link into Seacom) was being implemented and as part of the stress testing at Stellenbosch University, everyone post-grad and up (including faculty) were given free reign to suck the 600Mbps fibre dry. Remember doing 10 MB/s (megabytes per second) which was all good and well until it dawned on me that our office switch had not been upgraded to gigabit yet and the 10 MB/s I was getting was a direct result of the LAN limitation! Best part was Newsleecher having to pause downloads in occasion because it could not repair and extract the archives while downloading at >5 MB/s. Did 140GB in less that 8 hours :D
Anyone got any idea how hard it is to splice fibre? Thinking I should leech off that line haha! Willing to share...

Yeah thanks to Seacom, internet at universities is cheap and sometimes very fast, I am a student at C.P.U.T and like the other guy said were getting value for many with so many gigabytes downloaded so far

i am too lazy to go to varisity get stuff. we have 280mbit line. it is epic

Was fun til fortiguard came along and crapped on everything (our admin dont have the brains to block sites themselves, leaving it to a 3rd party. How humiliating!). Now there's a 10gbs connexion to Sanren/tenet, with only admin and staff members enjoying it. Thankfully there's more than rapidshare and megaupload

Wow...Aw man now I'm amped for uni next year
UCT (hopefully) here I come

Does WITS not have a DC network? UCT has/had one when I was there. Used to fill my drive with 40GB+ in about 1:30 hours.... hmm.. I miss those days.

iirc, the res at wits and all the net is all connected via a DC network.

I must say though, I need a laptop now that I'm at uni... downloading massive amounts of... porn :p.
