Not only VAGs. There is a lovely '69 280SL and the brown Citroën DS that I used as wedding car. Couple of original Minis, 1275 Cooper S, a Moke and a mini bakkie. I think an original Datsun 1200 bakkie too. Actually quite a few cars other than VAGs.

Unfortunately I’m not a huge BMW fan for several reasons, but fan or not, I need four doors. I’m also not keen on a rear-wheel drive. It may be the most fun/purist, but in the wet it’s not ideal. Call me boring, call me a bad driver… I’ve owned both front and rear-wheel drive cars and I want to try an AWD. All that being said, I would love to have the funds to own an M3 one day.
Truth be told, I don’t want my decision to any more difficult than it is so I specifically do not want to test drive the vehicles that are not feasible for me (i.e. two door vehicles/vehicles outside my price-range etc.). I’d rather live in ignorant bliss and not have the opportunity to fall in love with something I can’t or won’t buy at this stage.
To the matter at hand. I’ve been to both VW & Audi dealerships. Audi had an S3 on the floor but couldn’t arrange a test-drive annoyingly. I had a good look around the car and found myself irritated with several minor interior issues. The quality is top-knotch, but the design and placement of certain items did not gel with me. (I’m being OCD here of course). I do like the exterior aesthetic though.
I then went to VW and managed to arrange two R test drives. The first was underwhelming because it was a brand new vehicle - I could only drive it 2km and the salesman was sitting in the back. The second was incredible. Had a decent 25 minute drive on various roads and with no chaperone ;P I was impressed! It does drive extremely well – more power than you need on the road, superb handling and also very comfortable. Although somewhat visually understated from some angles, it is a good-looking car and the interior is quality. Some say it’s “just a golf”, but it does not drive like “just a golf”.
Ultimately, the R ticks the right boxes for me. It’s sufficiently comfortable, it’s incredible when you feel like playing and it’s practical enough to live with every day (fuel consumption, space, 4-doors etc.). My homework has also revealed that it holds value really well, which is important to me and should be to most people who don’t have unlimited funds.
I know it’s the safe choice (some might say boring?), but each to their own. I loved the vehicle. I’m currently in negotiations with the sales person

@splinter if you want join the Bmwfanatics.co.za... Post some pics of your car etc. Its a good site. You'd learn allot about your car and the brand and lots of helpful peeps on there. Forum events etc. I def do and still active there even though I don't own a Bmw at present. So yes this is an invitation

You will know you in an M car because of the way the suspension “absorbs” bumps in the road and not “go with the bumps”. The M235i is much better than the 135i it replaced of 2008 in terms of its suspension. But its not an M suspension.
