Hi

I'm sure this has been brought up many times and I'm sorry for not going through all the posts. I'm currently with Telkom and downloading at a max of 40 kbps on a 1mbps line doesn't gel with me. I would like to go to afrihost or some other company that at least delivers but I hear rumors about afrihost being shaped.

I do have a budget of around R400 and I want to stay on a 1mb line

Any and all help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks Guys!

That could be a line issue.

Have you tried getting it resolved first?

Why don't you post your line stats?

Maybe tell us what times of day you get slowness?

This.
Are you abusing the line by any chance? Telkom does, afaik, deprioritise your line if you're over-eager with the downloads.

And yes, Afrihost does shape, but so does everyone else. Although I certainly cannot complain about the shaping I get on my Afrihost account.

Is this on Uncapped or capped and I haven't had any problems with Telkom accounts and speed on any download or games so I suspect you have congestion on your exchange.

If congestion changing the ISP won't help you at all.

All of the above plus test with the following to max out your download (you shouldn't have a download problem on TI capped or uncapped during business hours):

Thanks for the replies

If by abusing you mean trying to watch Youtube videos on Photoshop tutorials i must say indeed!

The line does not seem to be an issue since i tested an alternate ISP (my friends account) and ran a neotel speed test and the speed went from 0 to 1.1mbps in no time where as with mweb(**I apologise if i left this out but I have an mweb account with a telkom line**) the speed test actually times out :wtf:

I have an uncapped account and as hard as I'm trying to find something there is an overwhelming amount of suggestions.

and no I'm not being miserly, I'm just broke

Ahem, that was a major detail you left out :)

MWeb have new throttling policies in place. Most other ISPs have cheaper uncapped accounts available - AfriHost, OpenWeb, TI are popular choices.

So you have a MWEb as your ISP and not Telkom?
I don't have a MWEB account, but I read somewhere that you can see in your client zone if you are throttled or not.
Maybe ask Mweb rep, Mweb Guy to look at your account?

You can also claim a free 1GB account from Afrihost to test your account with? You get that GB free every month. No money involved.
There is also a Telkom guest account that you can use to test your line speed, but I don't have the details.

Cancel MWEB and make Telkom your ISP. I have a 4mb Telkom uncapped package and there's no issues with speed EVER! They're much cheaper in any case.

I'm on the same fence... Shooot!? What happens if I need to make/receive calls, do I then still have to keep my Closer plan

Crumbs... Openweb or MWEB? So that I can also "experience the internet upgraded" still, I would need to hold on to the Closer package to
keep the line.

Just my 2c worth. I have been with Axxess, Openweb and recently Afrihost. Must say that Afrihost has been the best ISP to date for me. I was a little worried at first - Afrihost is a "sister" company to Axxess. All I can say is that my experience to date has been amazing!!

At the end of the day, its your money. Make your choice. If your ISP doesn't make you happy - move on!! ;)

We had several consultants trying to assist you today. I hope this has been sorted out now, but we are doing our best to assist you with your domain transfer :(
