Hi Guys,

Would like your input as to the best solution for 6 users that want to share an Internet Connection. We live in a block of flats and would like uncapped internet. It can be wired or wireless.
Much appreciated.

get a nice router that you can plug in external antenna.

connect biggish omni antenna, and they can connect with there wifi, if they close enough, they should maybe get bigger antennas if normal wifi adapter don't work.

Will probably download around 100Gigs a month and I will be using Torrents. Which ISp should I go with?

dude, if you're going to be sharing uncapped with 6 users and burning it with big downloads, be prepared for frustration, if not a cap on the account due to unfair use.
everybody's needs are different - what will the other people be doing on the line? is anybody going to be gaming?

Basically Internet browsing and collectively we will download around 100 to 150Gigs, nobody gaming. Most downloads will be off Torrents.

6 users is almost enough to make it worth while to setup a Squid proxy server for caching of HTTP content, as well as a network attached storage device to store all the shared content.
Torrents are such a big waste of bandwidth. You would be much better off by pooling money together for a news account and then to download everything from that instead.

You'll need an ADSL modem and preferably a Wireless N device with MIMO support.
My favorite combo is the D-Link DSL-2500U as an ADSL modem and TP-Link WR1043ND as Wireless AP + Gigabit router.
Unfortunately that will have a maximum of 4 users per LAN cable, so you'll need to buy a network switch if you want to add more users via LAN cable.

1 connection shared to 6 separate dwellings? if you do it wirelessly it's breaking some law i think. best check into that, because the fines are steep

We would prefer it to be wired. 6 Flats next to each other on one property.....still a problem if wireless?

+1

I would setup a smallish linux box as a proxy & also run sabnzbd on it for newshost, this way everybody can queue their downloads and you can restrict download speeds for nzb files. I would not bother with torrents, highly inefficient way of downloading stuff.

Anyone in JHB that could set it up for me? What would it cost approx?

Well, you could look at a Mikrotik RB750.
With this little device you can even have each user on his own ADSL account.
You could also do some limiting so that one user does not kill the connection for everybody else.
Monitoring each user is then also a breeze, as problems will happen with this type of a set-up.

Setting up a box to do the downloads is also a good idea. Just imagine everybody downloading the same stuff. It would be a waste!

Hi there.

If I was going to do this I would get a Wireless N Router/Modem and get it set up in bridge mode so that each user can connect to your secure WiFi connection with their own user accounts from their desktops via a Broadband PPPoE dialup configuration you do in windows. That way you will not have any issues with one account being abused and only the connection speed will be evenly devided between the active users.

e.g. 4meg connection with 4 active users = each user will be connected at +- 1mb/s.
