Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone could give me a few solutions or suggestions for my disk space capacity issue on my website.

I contacted Afrihost asking about purchasing extra disk space and they said that disk space is not for sale and I'll have to upgrade my package in order to get more space.

I'm currently on the Platinum Home package and I've used almost 2.1GB of my 3GB storage space and at the rate things are going, I'll have reached my 3GB cap at the end of next month. One of the guys at Afrihost said I should upgrade to Bronze Pro (4GB) or Silver Pro (10GB), but I mean, I've had the site up for 5 months now and have almost used all of my disk space. If I upgrade, in the next few months I'll finish my 4GB cap (Bronze Pro) or 10GB cap (Silver Pro). And eventually, I'll use up the 50GB cap if I upgrade to that package in the future.

So I'd just like to inquire as to what I should do? Are there (local?) hosts that provide unlimited disk space or at least, better amounts of disk space at a reasonable price, than Afrihost currently offers?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

First question you need to ask yourself (and answer) is, what is using the space?

Are you allowing people to upload stuff? Does the disc usage include your logs? Are they being rotated? Or is your website maybe not cleaning out expired sessions?

Thanks for your response, koffiejunkie.

I upload a lot of images. My website revolves around TV shows, so whether it be promotional pictures, candid pictures etc, I upload probably an average of 20-30 pictures a day. Doesn't seem like a lot, but that's what's chewing up my disk space.

I've also looked into hosting my images on another website (like Photobucket) but there's always a monthly bandwidth limit and I'll finish that cap in a day or two. I know Imageshack doesn't have a bandwidth limit, but I don't really trust that site. Seems dodgy.

Hey theocfan2,

If you're uploading this much a day, you need to look at where you'll be in 12 months or three years' time. Can you show us the site?

I would highly recommend looking at Rackspace CloudFiles. The pricing is pretty low (£0.11 per GB for storage and £0.12 for outgoing bandwidth per GB), and it's akamaid. So you can keep your site small and take some of the load and bandwidth use off your servers.

I'm sure you did this, but just incase ...

You can optimize the images, before uploading it with Photoshop or similar.

@KoffieJunkie,
Thanks for the suggestion. I looked into Rackspace CloudFiles and will definitely keep it as an option, when the time arises. The URL to my site is www.tvedge.net :)

@JasonH,
Thanks, looking into hosting with EliteHost!

@<?php?>,
Thanks for the tip, and yes I do already optimize the images :)
