I am trying to decide between a HP 550, Lenovo G530 and a Dell Inspiron 15. All have similar specs (Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual Core), 2GB, 250 ram). What I am trying to figure out is which is of these has better build and reputation? I am leaning towards the Dell because there is a free memory upgrade - but have heard some bad things about the brand.

I am buying from overseas so paying GBP 400 (R5k) for these models.

Any advice appreciated!

I realy like Dell, I have one myself, but HP and Lenovo are very good machines as well.

One thing, the HP track pad is far better than the Dell's IMO.

At the end of the day, with same specs, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three.

Which HP 550 is it (Does it have Vista Home or Basic)? I have three HP notebooks and I am happy with them. As mentioned, you can't really go wrong with which ever one you choose, it boils down to personal preference.

i have a Dell and it hasnt given me any problems. I also got mine from overseas(USA).

I'd go with the Dell if i was you.

Thanks guys!

Just seen this local add for R4999:
G530 15.4" Notebook Computer (M900) - Black
Intel Celeron 2.2GHz 1MB Cache, 2GB DDR2 Memory, 160GB Hard Drive, 1.3MP Webcam, Facial Recognition

No dual core though...

The Dell Deal (UK) is as follows: http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/hom...id=laptops_great_deals&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~ck=mn

Can anyone advise if better to get the base model GBP350 and upgrade the RAM or the GBP400 model which has the Pentium dual core?

i would go with the GBP400 option as it has an Intel Dual Core processor and comes with vista home premium which is much better than basic......you also get a bigger Hdd for only GBP50 more.

Any opinions on the Sony Vaio NS20 - similar specs but GBP 50 more. Is it worth spending more the get the build quality of a Sony?

Also, is there a performance difference between the Core 2 Duo and the Pentium Dual core?

try toshiba.!! i just got the satelite a300 and its really good. not sure on prices, but has dual core 2.13, 2gb ram, 320hdd and a hd graphics card! also has harman/kardon sound. there are about 5 in the a300 series all ranging in price. check it out

STAY AWAY FROM TOSHIBA & SONY VIAO. Here is why. If you are buying it from the UK then it will be the same stock that is being sold by place like LAPTOPS DIRECT & EBUYER. I do te h support for those 2 companies and can tell you we have endless problems with those 2 models the latest models have many hardware issue not mention the Vista & XP driver crap. Sony machines regulary crash out of box, Toshiba has been particulary troublesome. WiFi issues and general issues. Lenovo on the other hand has been by far the most stable brand.

End of the day it your choice hppe it works out. Cheers

i personaly would go with hp. why? because they mainly specialize in computers. toshiba makes everything so they dont have a focal point. that being said i think dell also only does computers and screens. sony? same as toshiba. they dont put all their resources into one field.

you should also look for the best deal

bex.cpt and everyone else - thanks for the advice. I am going with the Dell because of a great deal on an Inspiron 1545 (Core 2 Duo 6500, 4 G ram, 250G hardrive w Vista Premium) for GBP400. Nearly bought from laptops direct but glad I didnt based on the above.

I hope that the local DEll will give me support if I need it even though the machine is bought from UK.

goodluck with your purchase, im sure you wont have any issues with dell. again...goodluck
