Hey Ubuntu, Stop Making Linux Look Bad

Did this happen on a fresh install of Karmic or an upgrade from previous version?
Fresh install on Karmic and networking worked right outta the box for me, I was shocked, shocked I tell you :D
Seeing as you've just installed win7 why not try a fresh install with karmic, dual boot? All i did to get networking going was to go to 'network' and give myself a static ip and subnet mask, left the gateway blank. Shared a folder on my desktop and bawb was my uncle! I never even touched samba configs!
I know I had the unable to mount shares in Hardy all the time, it was a royal pita, that's why I ask if you did an upgrade or fresh install, perhaps there were some residual config files hanging around and causing this?

Was on a complete fresh install. Hmmm! I'll try giving all the PC's static ip's and see if it helps!

It will help! :p

Give main machine an IP of 192.168.0.1, normal subnet 255.255.255.0 and leave gateway empty. Give the rest of the pc's static ip's aswell 192.168.0.2 and onwards. You may have to restart networking for it to take effect I can't remember. To connect to shares from the linux box just open Nautilus and in the address bar type in smb://192.168.0.2/ This will list shares found on that box.

I wish you luck.

Well I yet to understand the issues with Karmic. I'm now installing it on another netbook tonight. It detects HSDPA modems without issue (E1550) or any preconfig. Its far better optimised than any other release.

Much easier to use for noobs too - ask my wife. I even got her to fire up Virtualbox on my netbook to work on her M$ tasks for her basic computer skills.

On both my netbook and work desktop I'm over the moon. Once my UNISA exams are over I will migrate my home desktop (need to do 60GB of backups first).

Oh gawd no, people who are scared of touching terminals will hate FreeBSD. If they really want to move to FreeBSD, NetBSD would be a good place to start.

Heh, my first *nix experience was with FreeBSD. The day I got X to start without crashing and KDE to load, was good! :D

I suspect they will have to bring out a point release for 9.10.

To many nasty issues to just leave it like it is.

I think I will use the LTS releases from now on. Makes sense. They come out every 2 years? I don't need the cutting edge features. I like the long battery life and speedy performance it gives me on the netbook. If the stable version will give me that with everything working then I am happy to wait to upgrade.

I will lock my netbook on the next LTS release as I cannot see much more improvement than what has already been achieved for future releases. I've already locked my wifes PC on the last LTS and I have yet to find a reason to update, never mind upgrade.

I have a HUAWEI K3715 USB modem. Does anyone know when the fix will be included in the kernel so mine will work :D

Try the betavine site and install the modswitch and vodafone app - the Vodafone app actually sets up the correct dev rules on install even if you never use it.
