Has anyone got a philips 47" lcd tv (47PFL7409) from hifi? They have a special on and I'm so tempted to get it.. But I keep hearing horror stories about their quality. Any experiences to share? good or bad..
 
What are they charging for tge Philips? I bought a Logik 47" Full HD from Game last year and it is excellent, they go for less then R8000 these days.
 
I don't have a problem with HiFi's quality, just their lack of after care service.

Also compare apples with apples, so shop around on model numbers. I find that HiFi often have old models or who-flung-dung ones. If you cannot find it on the Philips site, then don't buy it.
 
I have a 3 year old Philips 47" I bought from them, never gave any problems. I find that if you buy big brands they are okay, its when you buy the "made in same factory as....................." crap that you get screwed by them.
 
Thanks for info guys. I just saw makro has an LG 42" lcd on special - R7999 + 3 year warranty. It's 5 inches less.. but also R6000 less!
 
Take the LG. Not because the Philips is bad, but the LG has a better warranty. And you get eBucks :)
 
I spent a few grand fixing a Phillips 32" bought from HiFi - I agree go for the LG or some other brand with 3 yr warranty as Phillips only offer 1yr
 
I bought a 37" Philips LCD from HiFi 5 years ago - still going strong.. no problems whatsoever.
 
I've got the 42PFL7409 model. You'll be hard-pressed to find better quality & features for the price they charge for the 47" model now.

LG? Bleh. I finally managed to rid my life of that brand. Trust me, you need the 3-year warranties they offer.
 
Size matters - brand not so much - I am very happy with my 47" Logik and it comes standard with a 3 year warranty. Had a 86cm Logik CRT before the LCD and it is still going strong. Philips is a better brand than Game's house brand so go for it!

Also very happy with my 42PFL7409 model from HI FI.
 
My 2 Cents:
I stick to Samsung or LG, this based on on the experience of someone I knew who used to work in the industry and experienced the quality and reliability of these brands.
The brands not to touch are well known, and listed on many web sites. These also include Soyo, Go Video, Polaroid, Vizio, Insignia, Westinghouse, Olivia, Ilo, Sanyo, Phillips, RCA, Emerson & Daewoo as well as all the 3rd and 4th tier in-house brands here in SA. Many of these 3rd and 4th tier brands use cheap transformers and other components from questionable Chinese factories that you won't find in the 1st and 2nd tier brands.
There are no short cuts, what you pay is what you get!
 
My 2c. I have a lot of LG products in my home. However, when they break it takes forever to get them repaired.. I don't know if the same applies to other brand names but because of this I don't think I would buy an LCD / Plasma with the LG nameplate again.

I definitely won't buy not so well known namebrands. I would rather save for longer and buy something with a reputation, only next time definitely not LG..
 
I use to be in the furniture trade so on some products I don't care for brand, but for others its all about brand. Must say that the store you buy from is actually more important. Rather pay a little bit more and make it somebody elses problem when things go wrong.
